I should probably take it to the EOII board here, heh. The protector have saved a lot of game overs and was useful. I tried picking up TWEWY and played it for a bit but it really wasn't my game.

Oh, that's why i couldn't access their site. I thought i was the one having trouble with the link. I do have an account on Gamefaqs, wow.

The World Ends With You is EVERYBODY'S game...!

Still not a fan of protectors... Shall we take it to the EOII section now? The gloves are off! :P

Enjoying Arc Rise Fantasia's voice acting a lot more now that...
Niko is gone.
To think the voice work is actually pretty bad in the Japanese version. People asking for the Japanese voice-work thinking that it will improve things are likely just blown away by anything spoken in that language.

It's hard to tell how real a foreign language sounds. It most likely sounds like gibberish, and it's hard to sound bad speaking gibberish.

I would disagree entirely. Perhaps I have just brushed around too many languages and spent too much time speaking with people from all ends of the world, but I can tell a good Japanese VA from a bad. Oh, sorry. SEIYUU. JAPANESE TERMINOLOGY MIXED IN WITH ENGLISH BECAUSE JAPAN IS COOL.

I can also tell between forced voices and natural, relaxed voices. The Japanese work in Arc Rise Fantasia... is bad-forced instead of good-forced. I'll take my good-not-forced-boring English voice acting.

On second thought, I'll retract that. Bad-forced and bland-reading-from-sheet are both fucking terrible. The English VA is lackluster, forced at times, and otherwise uninspired. It's a hack job and is very reminiscent of PS1-era voice acting.

That and the Japanese VA isn't terrible. It's nothing amazing, sure, but it's not even remotely close to as bad as the English VA.

Sampson's point is very much correct. If you don't know the language or have no real experience with said language, you can't discern the difference between "good" and "bad" voice acting. That shouldn't really be a surprise, though. There's a lot of nuances in speech that come down to, you know, being able to discern what is being said.

To be fair, ARF also suffers from a pretty lol-worthy script in general which makes the English VA just that much more awkward to listen to.

while I'm at it. And .

I really want to know why their in-game script and voice script aren't the same. Like, ever. It seems to be an Ignition thing as they've yet to not do that.

Edit: That said, a lot of undub cries are from "OMG IT SOUNDS BETTER IN JAPANESE" crowd that don't understand things or just have some strange aversion to the English language.
I say this with a ton of undubs myself but, in my defense, I tend to play a few hours with the dub before I do any undubbing. Even then, it's pretty much just limited to DS titles, though, since most the dubs for those seem to be stupidly bad while the Japan releases tend to actually be rather high quality (or at the very least, hiring actual voice talent).
Also, it's not as bad as this:

So...it wins some points there, I guess.

That is pretty bad.

Also; the voice actors probably went with whatever felt more natural and what sounded better. The script should be corrected for the voice work in this case, not the other way around. The script in general is full of errors. The way these errors always occur in blocks leaves me to believe that the proof-readers were individuals each assigned to specific parts of the game. Either that or there were batches of missed dialogue left until the last minute or something obscure.

Actually, they're given a different script altogether, not a "decided to read the line this way instead."

At least, if it follows the trend of the other Ignition titles anyway. There are two full scripts done: one for the dialogue, one for the in-game script. They're done in separate locations altogether as well (again, the aforementioned dubbing studio being in Japan) ... which is why there's two scripts, actually.

But, you are right. Typically, the voiced line makes more sense / is more natural in their dub jobs. It's more apparent in Lux-Pain where the script is talking about the wrong event altogether at some points so it's more obvious they're two separate scripts.

Some quick reviews.

Alan Wake. Sucks.
Castlevania: Harmony of Despair. Sucks
Sin & Punishment: Star Successor. Great.
Arc Rise Fantasia: Overdone in some areas, not enough effort in others.
Ragnarok Online Renewal. Still sucks. I tried.
