How, pray tell, were you expecting it to be played? That's how the genre plays out. And, quite frankly, it's probably the best way for it.
Not that I believe half the shit they say in regards to Guild Wars 2 features~
Though, I will note it sounds like they took the basis of the original Guild Wars and just did the opposite of it wherever they could.
This looks interesting/amazing except that not only will I not have the money to pay their ridiculous monthly fee plan that they will set at whatever price, but I will also doubtfully have a strong enough laptop to actually run the damn thing without spending $100+ more on it just to get the proper fucking video cards and whatever other shitty aspect requirements it has.
Suuuure, it looks amazing, but since when has amazing actually run on a home computer without the owner having some supped-up machine.
>_< Couldn't even play Dragon Age Origins that a friend let me borrow on my laptop because I do not have the proper video card.

My computer that can run DA:O maxed out costs about $400 or so to build right now. That included the cost for the case, 1 TB storage, and so-on.
Edit: It was sub-$600 at the time of building it (12/1/2008) so it's about $100 cheaper now. And, again, that was with 1 TB storage which is practically extra if you have existing HDDs.
Also, Guild Wars has no monthly fee.
Edit: I'm actually in the process of building a sub-$500 PC for a friend that should run practically anything maxed (or at least 1920x1080 High) out right now. I'm a little sad that it looks like I can't get a GTX 460 in that price point but I guess we take what we can get.

Computer building (i.e., the actual putting shit together) is really easy. It's a fairly straightforward "hey this goes here since it's the only spot where it could possibly fit." Installing an OS is just ... putting the DVD in and/or just having an HD with it on already.
Even if you pre-built, there's ... decent places online to get a relatively cheap one (ibuypower, TigerDirect) if putting it together is a huge hassle. Honestly, the hardest part of building a computer is the figuring out what you want to put in it and getting parts that match (i.e., buying an Intel processor and then getting a motherboard that can actually support it~)
This does remind me, though ... I need to build a new PC. Probably turning this one into something for streaming stuff to the TV in the new apartment. Oh ... joy.

Coffee break!
The best part about this Earthbound play-through is that I'm actually getting my husband to watch me play. He's full of questions. I also let him name all the characters and such at the beginning.
NSFW-text:
Thus the favorite food is "pussy" and the favorite thing is "AIDS"
-___- he giggles so much when Mom says "Eat some pussy and scoot up to bed"
Also, coffee break forever....~
