It looks as if PSP2 is harder than PSP1. I don't remember dying this often after the first mission. Maybe I shouldn't have created a Newman Ranger again.

Yeah, unlike PSP1, PSP2 is actually challenging, still doable on say, a newman hunter (I played that HUney on the JP version), but not a cakewalk like PSP1. Also once you get to A-rank missions, enemies will ignore your NPCs and target you exclusively.

Me too. I like it when Emilia and my synth run up to the charging monsters and keep them busy with melee attacks and magic while I blast away at them.
