Newsflash, it must compete with 3DS. You want a price tag? I'll give you a price tag. The same fucking price as the 3DS but $10 more. I would seriously not be fucking surprised to see the thing listed at $260+
Whatever. What am I miffed about? I've never purchased consoles at first release price in my whole life anyways. Nothing new here. -_-;

$10 difference is absurd. The specs on it are too great for that price point. $299 is the lowest I can see them doing, though $349 is still realistic. Both are, personally, better deals than a 3DS since ... well, all they really added was 3D. Portable half-a-PS3 is very interesting.
Edit: I get to retract that now since Sony is (/maybe) selling it at a loss ... which makes $249 a relevant price point again.
And Nintendo "keeps costs down" by just having years old tech.
To be fair, if they dropped most the specs (seriously, rear track pad? TWO cameras? WiFi and 3G?) it would be a much easier sell at $249. Still, the tech route is what Sony went for and, if they don't want it to flop, they just cannot try to release it at >$349 and expect people to jump on it.
Edit: Your sig reminded me that Hsien-Ko got confirmed for MvC3 (and, well, Sentinel).
Also, 3DS bettery life fully detailed. Basically, 3 hours is max brightness and 5 hours for lowest brightness (and 4 hours for power saver mode with max brightness). Which is kind of ... deplorable for a handheld (i.e., for commutes, flights, etc.). I mean, I don't play much when not near a charger but that's still utterly ridiculous.
With WiFi/StreetPass on, it's closer to like 2.5 hours with max brightness, ~4.2 hours with lowest brightness.

I honestly can't remember the last time I took my PSP anywhere. Well, besides work a few times. But, I'm rather used to "OMG IT'S DYING" since I own an Evo and that things goes through battery like it's crack. Especially with WiFi or 4G going. Jesus christ it's ridiculous that I can net less charge in a day _with it charging off a PC_
As for the pricing, the 3DS should've been priced at like $199; nothing component wise seems that major. To compare, an iPhone 4 is $180 for components so ... yeah. The NGP is hovering near the $250 mark for component+manufacturing cost so, if the at loss bit is true, it's possible to see a $249 model. Hell, there's a chance of it being lower, truthfully.
But, somehow, I'm fearing we're all missing "something" when calculating the cost of production and it'll be [s]THREE[/s] FOUR NINE NINE US DOLLARS.

I take my systems to work to play during break and there's the fact that I like to carry them from my couch, to my room, to the kitchen, oh hey mom wants me upstairs, *sigh* the damn dog is barking outside....
I hate being attached to the damn charging cord and it's like "oh god... the charger is upstairs, in my room... but... it's in the middle of a good show on tv...."
Plus, the cord gets in my way when I'm playing. The heel of my palm rests right where it plugs in at. Plus, it's kinda a stretch anywhere from an outlet to a place I'm sitting.
I don't mind charging it (I remember the bitter days of I NEED TO BUY AAs) but I like it to AT LEAST last me one whole playing day, which I've calculated for me to be 6 hours on my least played day, to 8-10 hours on a normal playing day (if I'm REALLY into a game).

I typically play on my couch in my apartment which has an outlet conveniently on my right side so I get to plug it in and have it not be in the way. DS was simpler with the top hanging cable. Still, I tend to play until the battery gets low and then plug it in, break for an hour, and then return to it.
As for hand placement...I'd like to note this:
[hide]hint:hand position for using the sticks.[/hide]
Default hand positioning blocks the speakers~
