I think every online game has their own microcosm of community with names people recognize (any 'serious' StarCraft player recognizes TLO, IdrA, NesTea, etc.) in the competitive sphere. Arcades gave a more of a local one but it's not like online is completely absent of it. Then again, I have no idea if there's recognizable names in the FPS games so it may just be more for the RTS/Fighting Game communities.
Anyway, don't get me wrong, I'd love to have an arcade nearby. My local group of friends don't do fighting games* and I'm loving playing them now and hate online for it (at least now where I suck). I would love to have a place to go to for meeting other people to play against with them in the same room. It's a different experience entirely than playing people you know online. The sole fact I don't really have anyone to play against locally is the reason my copies of BlazBlue and MvC3 don't see much play ever.
*But they'll do Smash Bros all day and refuse to learn a new game. </bitter>

Honestly, when you said that, I just thought of this:

I can only imagine how epic it must feel having a crowd watching you play a game. I only had that happen to me once, when I was playing Yu-Gi-Oh against one of the best players in the country. XD It was one of those, "You got to be kidding, he's actually winning?" moments.
Long story short: I got insanely lucky with shutting down that guy's plays. XD He just barely beat me in the third duel.

One of my friends, back when he worked at Disneyland, would spend his entire paycheck every week. Once, we took him to a prize-oriented "arcade" (This was the place that had KOFXII)and he literally spent HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS playing ticket games so he could get Simpsons Monopoly.
