If you have a PSP then Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky. I will pimp this out every opportunity I get, yes.
L.A. Noire seems interesting (only like an hour in myself and it's getting sidelined for The Witcher 2 and Glorious Master Race etc.) but it's a hard game to recommend to people. GTA style world but none of the between mission faffing about with a rather unique premise. Comes down to how much you enjoy the idea of playing detective.
Also, Radiant Historia is a great game; a wonderful mix of Chrono Trigger, Suikoden, and Final Fantasy VI if I had to randomly decide to blend together some games. It does have quite a bit of backtracking by design (that gets a bit worse if you're bad at figuring out what to do) but it's still a pleasant game.
