Squall gets so much hate because he's an unlikable lead. I prefer to think that [hide]he dies at the end of the Assassination plot and everything else is some bizarre dying wish fantasy of his.[/hide] Makes the game more enjoyable to me, anyway.
And suddenly lets me laugh at some of the other stupid moments of the plot (fucking ... Orphanages).

LOL, Cloud is Cloud in every game I've seen him in (which is really just his own game and then in KH series). He does wallow in self pity ALL THE TIME. Like I said, :3 I'm going to ENJOY getting the chance to beat his fucking face in!!
VIII was good. The only reason I put it down was because I got another game (probably Kingdom Hearts). It was the game that I got with my PS2 system. As for why I dislike Laguna, it's nothing as serious as Cloud. I just felt he was kinda annoying, the same way he presents himself in Dissidia. He just never seemed to grow up. Meh, he annoys me, but not half as much as Cloud. If I had a choice between him and Cloud, I'd pick Laguna.
As for Squall, there is no comparison between him and Cloud. From the beginning Cloud was like "why should I fight... well, I guess I will just because my childhood sweetheart tells me, but I don't like it." Squall - he's just socially awkward. Actually, I enjoyed his *private thoughts* moment. It's even funnier dealing with him in KH series because in that game, you aren't privvy to his thoughts and as you stare at him when he takes his signature "thought pose" it's like..... XD god, what must he be thinking of Sora. But, if there was any sort of Cloud-like angst, Squall later in the game at least finally just says "fuck this angst" and does what he can for his girl. He improves. Cloud just got worse, because there was no excuse for his behavior.
I just wish that Rinoa hadn't been so... childish... I liked the love story angle, but I felt Squall could have done better. I was kinda left with the feeling "why did he fall in love with her?"
Anyways, I WISH fans would stop shouting for a FFVII remake. I'd much rather see a remake of FFVI. I keep staring at Terra and Kefka's characters in Dissidia and think "god... what I wouldn't give to see 6 without the sprites and in full character mode."

VII is the most popular entry in the series and, for many, their first FF (or RPG).
Not that I don't totally agree that FFVI should be remade first. It's an amazing title.
[spoiler]That said, I think your characterization of Cloud is rather shallow since it's more of a disconnect with reality he suffers from and some existential internal debate that causes his whole personality flaw. He's a character that suffered from delusions of grandeur when younger and couldn't cope with the reality of not being anything special.
But the initial disconnect from the character (any character in general) tends to cause problems and lends to shallow generalizations or "meh, who cares." Luke (Tales of the Abyss) is another since he spends so much time as a whiny twat that you want to beat that it's easy to overlook any character development of his or to take it and go "But he's still a whiny bitch."[/spoiler]
As for Rinoa, she's probably my favorite FF heroine design-wise. Just something about her, I dunno. I never quite liked the way the romance moved in the game though really for the opposite reason of yours: What, precisely, causes Rinoa to fall for Squall? Hence my earlier comment on how I like the game plays out more with [hide]Squall dying after the Assassination plot[/hide]; the game turns at that point into a Squall power-trip fantasy, really, as he does little wrong, saves the day, and gets the girl.

Even though I didn't like XI, Shantotto and Prishe are two of my favorites in Duodecim. My best are still Golbez and Squall, though. I used Onion Knight a lot in the first game as well.
I can't not main Golbez, he's just so cool, especially his voice.

I was maining Onion Knight before that. [hide]Onion Knight is such a cocky little shit.[/hide]

Am I the only one who finishes FF games? I've played I-IV and VII-IX all the way through (I think I finished V and VI too, but those were emulated, not owned). Okay, I usually don't get the super-hard optionals, but at least I finish the story. I don't remember V clearly, but III and VI were very good.
