Transsexual means someone who wants/intends to become the other sex, including surgery and everything. Transgender usually means someone who wants to live as the other sex, but not have surgery. It is more vague a term than transsexual though, and is also often used to describe the entire spectrum of transsexual, third-sex/gender, crossdressing, and what have you. Crossdresser is nowadays the more polite term for transvestite, as that term is by some considered to be associated with crossdressing for sexual purposes.
I think you got most of that, Kino.
Trance - I'd call the character a crossdresser, and leave out their intention.
Maxine - No worries, I won't slap you, silly or otherwise. 'Dyke' isn't really offensive to me at all because I'm used to lesbians using it.

My favorite cousin's lesbian softball team is called the "Mighty Dykes" which amuses me to no edn. Also makes it so when ignorant hillbillise drive by (this being Texas, after all) and shout "DYKE!" out the window they cheer.
I'd forgotten about 'cross-dresser' and that transvestite has the sexual connotation. I thinking of Izzard, a self-labeled transvestite (or rather an "Executive Transvestite") and hadn't considered the more "PC" terms.
I'm all into gender rights and such, so good to know I've got the terms straight.

"Trap" isn't about transsexuality, it isn't about people being who they want to be, it isn't about being rude and it isn't anything you would have to worry about in real life.
A trap is an anime/videogame/whatever guy who passes as a girl, and nothing more.
The word "trap" originated probably from way back when Bridget was a huge meme on 4chan. Probably like "Hey who's this Bridget girl she's kinda cute" "NO STOP IT'S A TRAP" or something. The word "trap," like so many other things from 4chan, has worked its way into regular internet lingo. It isn't something you would ever use in real life. Though I've seen plenty of images of real guys passing as girls (AND DOING A DELICIOUSLY GOOD JOB) and described them to friends as "irl traps," that word does not apply to any real-life anything anywhere. They're just.....guys dressed up as girls. Everything else is immaterial unless you are getting down to the personal level.
