I wouldn't know what they were if I didn't work where I work. We sell them, but I'd never seen them before that.

Pogs were Serious Business(tm) at my elementary school.

I did casually collect them back when they were en vogue.* Partly because some sets were kinda cute, but largely because it was the only thing to do, and the only interaction a kid could have with his peers pretty much had to be about pogs, such was the craze surrounding those little coloured discs of cardboard. Even if you weren't interested, you'd have to at least pretend that you did to some extent if you were to have any social presence.

I was glad when my elementary school banned them; it was getting completely out of control. Theft became a major problem, in one case on the order of around thousand dollars or something. I have no idea why a kid would bring that much to school other than for the purpose of pog-gambling--and make no mistake, it was gambling. There was an alarming increase in school yard violence of various sorts relating to money for pogs, sore losers robbing their lost pogs back, charges of rigged games, etc.

You could barely walk anywhere due to all the other kids camped out all over the hallway floors entranced by sound of all their little "slammers" bouncing around, like slot machine addicts hypnotised by all the fruit whizzing past the screen. It was like walking though a casino scene from an old black&white mobster flick, complete with all the usual characters.

Ridiculous.

* Wait, noodles, you're 17, right? IIRC the Pog mania went around when I was 11-ish.... 0_o

PS: I'm not saying pogs were bad per se. I liked them too! But it had unfortunately turned into a serious addiction problem for many kids.
