Maybe it's related to clerics' weapons being maces? Not that that makes sense really.

Well, there is some religious notion where those of a cloth could not wield bladed weapons, to avoid drawing blood. Weapons like clubs, some maces, etc., are fine. This could be where DnD got the original design from.

Though game designers largely forgot about the meaning, and all that remains is the trope. That's probably why White Mages in FF end up with axes, Acolytes in RO wielding Swordmaces, etc.
