On the subject of signatures, I think bishops moving diagonally has to do with them affecting politics from odd angles and with different constraints compared to the more secular pieces. Also apparently they evolved from elephants, which I just found out.
edit: Huh. And apparently queens in the original version of the game were actually counsellors, and were pretty much the second most horrible piece on the board.

Sacred Stones was my first Fire Emblem game...I have fond memories of having no idea how to build an actual team and just using Seth to kill everything instead.
