I'm just opposed to any kind of horseback riding, be it sport or war.

If you want my boring reason as to why.

Look at fiction. Look at Hollywood. Heck, even look at history. You hear countless tales of great heroes charging into war and doing great things, but what about the horse? Sure some people appreciate their horse more than others but rarely does the horse get any sort of tribute... even when s/he does the hardest part of the job sometimes. A lot of the times in a war their horse will just get injured and left behind to rot.

Even in classic and modern fantasy... seem deal. It might seem really strange to do, but I hate how say a Fire Emblem hero saves their land and defeats the disgusting villian and at the end, everyone is like "YAY YOU SAVED THE WORLD YOU'RE SO AWESOME! :D" while the horse is just forgotten. That case is a lot harder to fix so I don't really hold it against anyone though Legend of Zelda does a better job with Epona.

And film... it's not as bad today, but it was terrible back then. Picture this: a scene where a bandit rides off a cliff. Shot is done, camera cuts off, stunt double swims out. What happens to the horse? It dies. I'm not making this up. They used to do this. It's so disgusting. Hollywood doesn't treat them like expendible props anymore but they still don't treat them as nicely as I'd like them to. They're fellow actors. Show some respect.

There are too many people who don't understand the difference between slavery and friendship. A good rancher can mount their horse without a saddle and s/he will take them where they need to go without forcing it. The aboriginals and such native North American tribes are a few good examples of a bond with their horse.

Let horses ride the backs of humans for a few centuries and maybe they'll think twice about what they've done.

<_< I think you guys are thinking WAY too much into this.

LOL, Kino. I never claimed to be the better person anywhere ^_^. Never really cared, either. I know some of my ideals and opinions are messed up and some are works in progress. That's fine. XD

I think a horse is a very beautiful and daring creature. I would love to see a wild horse and it's probably the only thing I miss about an "uncivilized" America. However, they are as equally as beautiful in the chores that they are capable of doing and the things that have done for humans. You are right, rarely are they ever mentioned - but isn't it better that way? Better to be unrecognized than overglorified in my opinion.

And there's nothing more exciting than seeing horses racing against each other - and they find that as equally as enjoyable.

As for horses left to rot on the fields after some immense battle - you can't possibly think that humans were treated any better. That's why carrion birds enjoyed the fields of battle so much. Humans lay right beside their horses to rot away. So don't think for a second they received any harsher treatment than the men that rode on them.

In any of the examples you gave, Elys, do you really think the people that the horses worked beside were treated any better? There were humans enslaved right along with horses, whipped and overworked. Actors in Hollywood, unless they are some big name celebrity, are also treated just as baddly.

Horses are treated in no less fashion than our own human companions.

history usually provides a better account of how horses are treated than fiction
