So I'm renting the full first season of Clannad, which brings up a question:
I LOVE Kanon and I LOVE Clannad's first season, but when rumors started to float around about the second season's After Story I got so pissed off the more I investigated, the more I did not want to watch it. (to the point that, yes, I did end up spoiling the whole story - that's how pissed off I was...)
Reading some reviews while not trying to spoil myself (in case there was anything left to spoil me) just seems to deepen my suspicious.
MAJOR CLANNAD SPOILERS
Seriously give me your advice: should I bother to watch it.
I have heard that it is an OMG Nagisa dies (fuuuuuck), Tomoya then becomes his dad (what the hell...) and then at the end when he FINALLY decides "oh I should be a good dad" his daughter dies (................)
And to make matters worse, the series then disgraces itself by doing a "OH HEY - MAGICAL RESET!!" and gives an outcome "this is what the story could have been like if we decided not to fucking kill all the main characters - enjoy."
... It's like the ironic twist in the Stephen King movie Mist that pissed me off - awesome movie up until the part the dad kills the boy and two seconds later the mist clears. It just sounds sickening and a lot like poor storytelling. A "let's see how we can fuck our audience over".
Is the second season even worth bothering to watch? Or am I actually missing out on something good.

I haven't seen the anime yet (...wow, how have I not seen that yet) but I did play the games so:
The whole "WHEN I WISH UPON A STAR" reset button isn't as silly as it sounds. I mean, yeah, the series was oh-so-rooted in reality up to that point (...sort of) but it's not exactly out of nowhere. The entire events of the game build up to it and it's still very much the "TRUE GOOD END" route of all the right things going on to auto-magically repair things.
My understanding of the second season is it's far more of the bad end route of the game. If you want that feeling, you can just ... ignore the finale. Clannad is more about the characters than what occurs, though "lolz everybody dies your life sucks Tomoya" is pretty big.
For what it's worth, even Tomoyo After is /wrists depressing. And with a better female role since I fucking loathe Nagisa holy shit. Hell, [hide]there's no reset button in Tomoyo After and he still dies after remembering who Tomoyo is after _years_ of her dating the equivalence of a goldfish. Or maybe I blocked out the reset button but I'm pretty sure he just flat out dies T.T.[/hide]
*sigh* I'll just get it over with then and watch it. I could be missing out on a real treat - and if not, then at least I will know and have a proper reason to hate it.
I like Key and I like Key's "depressing" (*sheds a tear for Makoto and Fuuko*) but that's because there's a POINT to the depressing. Whenever I read the After Story stuff there... doesn't seem a point... and it even seems out of character to hear about what Tomoyo does [hide]to the daughter and how he treats her much as his dad treated him[/hide]. It sounds... frustrating. But... a part of me keeps telling myself that I should trust these developers - that they know what they are doing.
I love tear jerkers, but only when they aren't just trying to see how much they can tear my heart open - then I give it a negative (Harry Potter's finale, for example... it was uncalled for).

I mostly watched Clannad for more "LEVELED UP XXX" and "Starfish!!!" events. But those happened less and less as the series went along. Although Fuuko kept appearing, so that made my day. It was like this whole carrot and stick thing, they'd dangle Fuuko in my face and then start hitting me over the back of the head with depressing events.
I just marathoned "Now and Then, Here and There", all in one night. I now need something less depressing. Suggestions? I'm considering Maria†Holic or more Slayers. Anything will do though.

If you can't be kind, at least have the decency to be vague.

^_^ I'm enjoying rewatching Clannad. I'm such a fan of Key characters. Fuuko is DEFINITELY the best, Nagisa second. Kyou and Tomoyo I batch together and stick at the bottom of my list. I like them but... they just seem so typical tsundere they just can't win my love completely. Honestly I wish instead of Kyou, her sister had been the love interest with Kyou as the side.
I love Kotomi's arc finale the most. It's so sweet <3
I swear, if I go through After Story and get nothing out of it but a bleeding heart, I'm going to be pissed.
@Legacy: :3 The RANDOM-FUUKO scenes were full of major win. Just when I was getting bored with a scene (like I remember a Tomoyo scene) she popped up and made me laugh XD
That is one thing I'm hoping to see in After Story. A conclusion of any sort to Fuuko.
Even if it is death. *sigh*
