Re: What anime are you currently watching?
My sister and I just watched the first episode of Meganebu! and well, it was entertaining to say the least. Though the subs we used was messing up on the TV so we ended up having an entire conversation lost because the subs was too busy translating the SFX in the background so she's currently re-torrenting them so its either at the TV again, or at her computer.
And despite them being the very same format (.mkv) the TV refused to play the visuals on Pokémon Origins (but the audio was there), so displeased with it right now. Also, hopefully sometime soon we'll watch Saint Young Men the Movie.
Edit: We watched the first five episodes of Meganebu! and WOW is this show a lot about the eye candy! As part of the audience they are aiming towards, I am utterly pleased, especially with the fact there's variety in men for me to oogle my eyes at. Though I do have to say that Tetsu and Shirogane are my favorites, purely for appearance, Yukiya also being a nice choice.

Are you refering to the TV or the PC? I actually don't really remember what brand the TV is, but it is a new TV, they bought it... last month. Though we did watch in on the PC in the end and we used good ol' VLC. I'm not sure if her's the latest, but it worked fine. At some times the visuals would garble together if there was a lot of movement involved, but that's because her laptop is rather old.
And we finished watching up to episode 10, as long as HorribleSub have gotten. Still, all of the eye candy! Mitsuki is still really annoying, though there was a short moment where I liked him (and then it was basically gone instantly).

but...like, the tv can't have anything to do with it. it's just a machine that shows whatever your laptop is showing. i'm assuming you are broadcasting the laptop screen to the tv and then fullscreening VLC?
i don't understand what you mean by the subs being busy translating sfx. the subtitles are programmed into the mkv ahead of time to fit whatever size you play it in, they aren't transcribing what is heard as it happens... either you had a bad file, bad subs, or you didn't install the CCCP

Re: What anime are you currently watching?
What no, the TV have USB ports, so we just plugged the USB in, there was no laptop involved for watching Meganebu! on the TV (mainly because sis pulled out the battery for the laptop since she never carries it around anymore).
I mean, most of the time when you watch DVDs and you use the one for those with bad hearing, all of the subtitles (including the [insert noise/music/off screen events] ones) are at the bottom. So I'm guessing the TV treated the file as if it was a DVD.

Re: What anime are you currently watching?
oh so this was a "smart tv" that can play files directly off a USB drive? i was confused as to why you were saying either the tv or the computer could be at fault when you aren't using a computer. a media player built into a TV is not gonna have the necessary software or codecs to run an anime .mkv video, period, at least so far
even so, when you play a dvd with subtitles set to hearing impaired or whatever, that's the file on the dvd, it has nothing to do with the TV. it's not treating the file as anything it's just reading whats there.

MKV (Matroska Video) is a container format. The actual video, audio and subtitles can be in all kinds of different formats. If the video, audio or subtitle streams are in a format your TV doesn't understand you still can't watch them properly even though it could understand the container format or one or more of the streams. VLC or Mplayer can identify the different components for you.

Re: What anime are you currently watching?
Wow um okay, I guess thanks for all the feedback? I don't know if we'll use the TV to watch many mkv files though, because that means draging things all over the place and it feels rather unecessary when we could just watch it fine on a computer. Besides, as per mentioned, my sister who is the one taking things down doesn't have the battery in her laptop anymore, so she would be forced to shut it down, take it downstairs to the basement, activate it, watch whatever we're watching, shut it down again, go upstairs, put it on again and do whatever she was doing before again. Doesn't sound too appealing. We'll probably use it for watching avi files though, those shouldn't be a problem, or at least something with hardcoded subs.
aka thanks but kind of not necessary because I doubt we'll use it much after this whole thing
