This is coming from a person that you know LOVES LOVES subs:

The dub version of Howl's Moving Castle is WAY better than the sub. Well, not "way" better, but, there's a lot more joking and lightheartedness. Things that Miyazaki tried to make funny but didn't come across just right were made better in the dub.

Calcifer received the BIGGEST improvement. And I agree with you. Silence = better. I prefer watching Spirited Away and Castle in the Sky in sub because it had those subtle nuances.

But, I think for this movie, it needed the comedy, not the drama. It had plenty enough drama in my opinion.

I really do think it is an absolute treat how they dubbed it and I wish all dubs were as good as HMC's.

Miyazaki's movies generally have great dubs compared to most anime.

After incident, Miyazaki's work will never be butchered again. ^-^ Thank goodness. I am quite happy I can enjoy the work of Studio Ghibli in either language.

Started watching Rental Magica and Tokyo Majin.

Only watched the first few episodes of both. They look promising, but I hate the non-chronical order of episodes sooooo much...

Watched five episodes of Last Exile with my father. It was okay... good enough to keep me around. I'll probably join him for more next time he's watching it.
