Oy, it's again been ages since I posted an update here. is turning out to be a huge time sink, which is interfering with my anime watching.
Seirei No Moribito (aka Guardian Of The Spirit) - It has a strong female protagonist, and gets a lot of praise. Sounds interesting, ne?
The first episode looks very good indeed. The animation is smooth, with 3D and 2D blended seamlessly. And Balsa is very cool and confident.
Yes, this anime deserves its reputation. It's indeed of top quality. The last episode (post-ending conclusion) could've been a little better I think, but otherwise this series was very satisfying.
After that I watched Princess Tutu - Ahiru is cuute! ^_^ I like the way she sounds duck-like even when she's speaking normally.
This anime is a really nice take on the magical girl genre. It combines fairytales with ballet, making it quite unique. Although it was a little deeper, I'm not sure the second half of the series was as good as the first. It was a little chaotic at times.
I wanted to try Venus Versus Virus or Witchblade, but neither I could find online, so I picked Mokke and Ichigo Mashimaro next.
Mokke reminds me a little of Mushishi. Supernatural phenomena and a beautiful countryside setting. The animation isn't bad, but there are a lot of still shots or pans, which seems kinda cheap.
This anime is really slice-of-life in that there is no ongoing plot whatsoever. Except for the explanations/background in early episodes and the rare reference to earlier events, you could watch this series out of order. It's entertaining, but not riveting or anything. Like I said, the backgrounds look very nice, but the faces switch between one expression and another without any transition, which looks rather cheap. Dialogue is also sometimes a bit stiff.
Ichigo Mashimaro (aka Strawberry Marshmallow) - Is this what is meant by 'moe'? It's cute though.
Yes, it's cute, but I found the cuteness sometimes was laid on too thickly, which made it stupid. I mean, Matsuri-chan being clumsy now and then is funny, but her acting like a complete idiot isn't so much. Also, it's normal for everyone in anime to look younger than they actually are, but Ichigo Mashimaro took it too far. Nobue looks like she's 16 or so, and the rest look/act like they're maybe 6 or 7 years old. Overall this anime was sort of okay, but I got a little bored with the lack of plot within episodes.
Ichigo Mashimaro OVA - Most notable difference between the series and this OVA is that the clothes are more frilly/impractical. If this is what 'moe' is like, I think I'll stick with regular cuteness, thank you.
Currently I'm downloading/have lined up to watch: Real Drive, Scrapped Princess, Kite, and Mnemosyne. The first two because they looked interesting when I was browsing the ANN encyclopedia. Kite because it was referenced on ANN a while ago. I'm not sure which version this is. If it's a bad one I'll just have to skip over the icky content I suppose. Mnemosyne was reported to be licensed last week, so I figured I'd better download it quickly before it disappears (like Venus Versus Virus and Witchblade). I prefer to watch anime before I buy them you see.
