The relationships (and story as a whole) was done far better in the Manga of KnM. Worth a read if the Anime interested you.
Plus, they changed so much it'll be like a brand new experience!
Edit: It is worth noting that the original run of KnM wasn't that long either (2 Volumes) so ... it's not like the Anime had a gigantic amount of source material.
That and, personally, the story wasn't that great and the fact it tried to do everything made for overall weak characters and weak storytelling. *shrugs*
Plus the manga ending strangeness ... though it isn't as bittersweet (personally) as the Anime ending.
I have no idea how Souma gets in the way of the story. The little love triangle is the majority of the story/character development ... what little there is. Actually, I guess I take that back; the Tsubasa and Souma stuff was pretty superfluous and time wasting >>
I also don't get the "lesbians are bad" cliche vibe, more of a those two in particular together is impossible. I dunno. Guess I just liked thinking of it more of a star-crossed lovers kind of thing.
This IS (...was?) a shounen manga/anime. It just happened to choose a yuri pairing.
Edit: About that vibe... (Spoilers, most likely not Anime-only)
I mean, I can possibly see it but I suppose I choose to rather view it as a "futile love" of them being destined to not be with one another due to their roles, hence Chikane trying to end the cycle by being hated by Himeko so she'll choose a world without her. Instead, she chooses to not be reborn but to remain with Chikane forever and be "trapped" in the shrine with her.
I honestly can't remember the Anime ending as well (barring the reincarnation without memories bit) so ... yeah. I guess the manga just does a better job of making it seem different? I dunno.
The cliché is that "lesbians can't be allowed to live 'together happily ever after'". Either one or both of them gets killed off, or turns out to be straight after all, or turns out to be a villain, or goes crazy, or they're tragically separated, or whatever mechanism the writers come up with to avoid a happy ending for a lesbian couple. The problem is not in any one particular story; there's always some semi-plausible excuse for why it just can't happen. The problem is that such endings are so common.

Ahhh, I get you now. In that case, yeah, pretty much agree that KnM ended that way. I really don't like that type of ending, regardless of the pairing.
Manga spoilers
For what it's worth, they're together forever in the ending ... at least until their next reincarnation where they are reborn as lovers still.
...incestual lesbian lovers, because a normal lesbian relationship wasn't enough I suppose. Anyway, they do get a "happily ever after" ending, even with their fate still the same (one of them must die). They retained their memories on that reincarnation and, even with the future ahead, they had each other until the end. I think it's just hinting that they'll repeat Himeko's choice for eternity (be together in life, choose to die together, reincarnation, repeat).
I suppose not a traditional happily ever after but it's better than "well, one died and yay back to square one."
I just want to know if there's a plan for the following cycle.
KnM spoilers (Manga)
Normal Lesbian relationship -> Incestual Lesbian relationship -> WHAT THE FUCK IS NEXT?
Incestual Lesbian Orgy is clearly the next step. Futanari maybe?
Shit, I'm thinking about this too much and it scares me. Frightens me on the inside.
I don't think I ever watched all of Strawberry Panic. Or any of it, actually. I think I remember reading a bit when some group started scans for it but no more than that. Hm...

Trance - Liking Strawberry Panic doesn't make you horrible. I think it was okayish. Not great writing, but it was nice to see some lesbian romance.
Your incest quote is icky though.

*wants to watch Strawberry Panic* :\ Just 'cause it's a title that keeps coming up again and again and again. ^_^ I LOVE tragic-romance anyway, I don't care what form it comes in. :O I LOVE stories that tear the hearts of the characters before they finally end up together... but that's the trick... >_> they HAVE to end up together at the end, and what is said above about the typical lesbian endings as me worried. To me that screams "why the fuck did I watch this again?"
