I swear there was a way to have a Awakened Cat as familiar, that shot fireballs and had a dozen cat familiars of its own.

The 4e conversion looks interesting; the patron and familiar functions are certainly different than they are in Pathfinder. I like the Pathfinder witch -- I've got a great mix of versatile spells and my primary function is a de-buffer, which is really fun.
I'm rolling a new character for what we call the "B-Team" -- basically when our main characters, the A-Team, (in my case, Deneb) are off on the plot adventure, the B-Team stays at home and takes care of tiny "Monster of the Day" type adventures. Usually we run the B-Team when Mr Kino, myself, and the boys (the DM and his roommate) are all available to RP, but my co-worker can't join us, so we go on mini-adventures that don't advance the plot.
Anyway, my B-Team character is going to be a Cavalier.
And a centaur.
So instead of getting a mount, the centaur is his own mount.

Pathfinder has a Cavalier Archetype that lets you pick any animal companion you are capable of riding, or any other beast with DM approval, at 7th level.
My DM and I are working out the mechanics of a centaur player character, since no existing character race appears. I think I'm going to get some monster feats instead of the normal mount bonuses, since they wouldn't apply to me since my character won't have a mount, he just is a mount.
I'm pretty excited. There's apparently a centaur plot hook I'll get introduced as a part of, and I get a cool rare longbow.
My DM wants me to go Paladin and take a specific archetype. I was going to go Cavalier, but whatevs! I'm not picky. Paladins get extra stuff like healing and that, and better saves.

Would other people be able to ride your Centaur? It might add some encumbrance, I think.

I'm asking my DM if I can let the PCs ride me.
We don't bother with encumbrance as a gameplay mechanic, so I'm trying to trade the standard centaur's armor-based movement restriction to a rider-based one -- normal movement 50feet, 35 feet if being ridden.

Do you have any lifting mechanics left? Could just repurpose those and give you a four legs lift bonus or something.

I'm fairly certain Centaurs have an awesome racial strength bonus already.

We don't mess with lifting mechanics, I have no idea what those are.
Pathfinder Centaurs have better dex than strength. I've ended up with insane saves, since I'm Centaur/Paladin (monster HD base saves + paladin base saves + charisma + modifiers = 12 is my lowest save, and I have 8 class levels). I'll be using a longbow the DM is going to give me as an artifact of my people.
