1. Father's choice for me, not mine.
2. It can STILL play all my music, and if I can't, I have something that will convert it to an ogg vorbis file so that it WILL play.
3. I like the inference a lot better.
4. I don't have my own laptop and I can't afford one, for I don't have a job yet.
I used to use a Windows XP, when I first got onto this I thought "This is horrible", then, later I found it can still do everything windows could, the only thing it really couldn't do was play MP3s [As mentioned in point 2, I have a MP3 -> Ogg Vorbis Converter.], use Direct X. [Which isn't really any of my concern, though it is used a lot], and run .exe files [but I have Wine for that and for the most part wine is pretty good with handling the .exe files I use].

Welcome to the forums!!
:3 Yeah, there's been no news YET about the third game being brought over to America, however, I have high hopes. Etrian Odyssey was announced like three months after its Japan release and EO2 one month after is Japan release. As of this week and next week I WILL be constantly combing and checking Atlus USA for updates. However, seriously, even those with press passes only learn things a mere two hours ahead of others. Atlus USA (no, Atlus itself) is notoriously tight lipped. *sigh*
*throws confetti* New people!! I love it XD
And, yes, Kimiko is the one who uses Linux. I'm 99.9% sure of this.

So I guess I ought to introduce myself then...
Hey everyone! I go by postmanmanman many places, so, if by some infinitesimally small chance, you recognize the name, yes, I am postmanmanman.
The story of how I came to love Etrian Odyssey is a fairly long a convoluted one, so here's the short and sweet version: I was introduced to roguelikes last year or so and began investigating other hardcore RPG genres, and found out about Wizardry, which I wanted to try, but was slightly terrified by the archaic interface. (Though, in retrospect, I'm not sure why, since I play games like NetHack and Angband with little trouble...) As a neophyte to RPGs, I didn't really know where to begin playing, but I knew that I wanted something on the DS. I can't stand most JRPGs (Atlus's stuff being an exception!), but Etrian Odyssey jumped out at me as being distinctly unique, so I picked up a new copy of EOII on a whim.
Stunned by how much I enjoyed it, I've since taken to several other RPGs (mostly on the DS) such as Shin Megami Tensei Devil Survivor and the (incredibly superb!) The Dark Spire. Yes, I've yet to play an Atlus game that I considered derivative, and that makes me very happy indeed.
Currently, I'm waiting for my pre-order of Shin Megami Tensei Strange Journey to arrive and sacrificing small mammals to the gods of luck in an attempt to get Atlus to decide to localize EOIII. :V
Oh yeah, and aside from obscure Atlus games, I'm a heavy PC gamer. Mostly with Valve's stuff, like Left 4 Dead 2 or Half-Life. And I consider all pirates leeches on the industry, and tend to tackle anyone and everyone who mentions them.

Hiya Liferake! Welcome to ItL
Cool, another Linux (and Ubuntu) user

Yes, that's me who refuses to have anything to do with Microsoft.
I've never had any trouble playing mp3s (my own music is all in ogg format though). You probably forgot to install the restricted-extras package. See for more info.
Your avatar is very.. unique.

LOL postman, if it will make you feel any better, I don't see why they WOULDN'T bring the game over. It's made by their parent-company Atlus, and they've been able to make sales off of it twice.
x_x Still... I pray every night to whatever God is in control of it gaming destiny.
@pirates: If I can buy it over here without much hassle and for a reasonable price, I will agree wholeheartedly with this sentiment, though, seriously, I will not deny that if faced with a less expensive USED copy of a game or something, I will still buy the used copy.

Oh, and hiya Postman³! Welcome to ItL to you too
You come from a classic roguelike background, eh? I would guess most people come to EO from the RPG side of the spectrum, but that doesn't really matter. If I may ask, what about most JRPGs is it that you can't stand?
Have you played the Izuna games yet? I think they're also in the roguelike category, and they're from Atlus as well.
Aww, the poor small mammals..

I trust Atlus will translate EO3 too. The previous EO games did very well for them I think, so no reason to abandon the franchise now.
No pirating here either. I buy all my games and music and DVDs. Well, the music and anime I buy after I've tried them, but I find that morally okay.

<_< does pirating visual novels count. *sigh* -_-; But seriously, I feel that they are not being brought over any time soon and if they were I'd buy them. I STILL want to buy Ever17 even though the company went out of business. T-T
See, my thing is when I do pirate I end up buying it in the end anyway if I like it ^_^;
XD I remember once trying to play only the rom of Zelda: Minish Cap and trying to be satisfied with that. I couldn't! o_o My SOUL cried out for the game. The more I played the more I wanted it desperately. <3
-_- But I guess I'm still a bad girl in the end, though, huh?
As for music, I don't like it enough to bother pirating it. Meh.

Just to chime in on Wine, if there's anything big you're trying to run that doesn't work, mention it and I'll bring it up with my roomate. He codes for Wine and goes through the requests to get things up-and-running for it (though he's busy with Starcraft II and getting that working right now).
Personally, I'm not a big fan of most Linux distros. If only for the fact that I'm a PC gamer and running some things is a chore without a huge gain in other features that I'd regularly use. Though, I could just dual boot I suppose.
Plus, vastly inferior media (as far as softsub anime and such at very least) playback. We tried writing our own code and fixing it but I said fuck it. I'll stick to my Windows which hasn't failed me in however many years I've been using it (16? or so?).
Welcome Liferake and postmanmanman!
@Liferake: I, too, prefer Ogg Vorbis. Since you already have Wine going, you may want to take a look at foobar2000 for your audio playback and conversion needs. Although I'm Windows XP, I switched from WinAmp to foobar about a year ago and haven't looked back. and a .
@Maxine: I'm with you on turning on the radio. The only things I'll tune in to is the weekly "Hearts of Space" program on NPR and the local classical station. Otherwise it's CDs, lectures, video game soundtracks, or silence.
I'm thinking the "Sweet Alabama" song you mention is a tribute/mashup by Kid Rock named . When I first heard it I thought the same thing: "What sort of derivative horsesh** it this?" I still don't care for it too much, but it doesn't make me retch any more. Mainstream tunes sure have been pretty bland.
@negzee, et al on "try before you buy":
I have found myself in the reverse situation. I had a copy of Riviera that crapped out on me. I'm guessing it was a internal battery issue because all my saves magically got wiped overnight. Can't sell a game in that state with a clear conscience so I chucked it. Riviera is a lot more fun now with on-demand save states and fast-forward.
@EO3 release: I'm guessing we'll see it around August or September, judging from the timelines of EO1 and 2. Four months seems to be the interval between JP and US releases for those. I'm hedging with September because SMT:SJ took five and a half months.
