Sacred Stones wasn't bad, it just wasn't as good as the rest of the series. Thanks in part to a shorter story (at least there were two paths) and the grindable world map feature...
At any rate, it was still perfectly enjoyable.
But Shadow Dragon was a disappointment. Out of all of the recent Fire Emblem games, I would say that was the worst. There was so much that could be done with the game to improve it, but it ended up just being the first FE game...with prettier graphics and base-breaking translations. I still liked it, though.

Exactly. You are just constantly steamrolling the enemy. I do not mind easy games, but strategy games should pose the difficulty necessary to at least have the player pay attention. Other than that, it had nice map design (unlike Radiant Dawn) and probably better music than the other GBA titles.
The story... not going to talk about that. ¬ ¬

So I definitely came to rant about how school is currently sucking my life away like some kind of leach. Then I came here and saw talk of FE. I have to say that after beating Shadow Dragon I sold it. I really didn't enjoy anything about it. I actually like SS a lot, though I agree it's easy. The music was good and the characters were engaging even if the story was meh. I keep waiting for a new FE to be announced but so far it seems like SD sort of killed the series.

For both my sister and I, who are not FE veterans and don't like the games too hard, the game was absolutely enjoyable and we didn't feel "pressured" and were able to feel relaxed and enjoy trying to work on the characters' mini stories.
My sister is miffed that no other game features a "tower" feature or somewhere she can level up easily. She told me she just can't get into any other FE or SRPG game because of this. She realizes it's a unique trait but it's a trait that she fell in love with saddly.
^_^ Not all of us want to be Scy.

My main gripe was that it's too easy to just end up with units that utterly dominate everything that goes up against them. And they're also typically the more interesting characters to begin with anyway, not some random fuck that you expect to suck like previous FEs. Hell, even the worst growth characters are only "bad" because there's someone else with just that much better stats (Innes vs Neimi, for instance ... or like all of the Cavaliers).
Incidentally, the Coliseum's in FE7 (just FE in the US) are in-map versions of the tower. Well, sort of. You can't control your character at all but it's not like you can't figure out which fights you're supposed to win.
*shrugs* I just find it a bit offsetting when I can play a strategy game and my main strategy is "don't care, everything dies."
Edit: Also, this has made me want to get the emulators on my Evo working so I can waste time at work replaying FEs and Suikoden. Goddamnit.

When I first played SS I actually thought the tower was a cool idea. Eventually though I lost interest in it. I feel like it disrupts the flow of the story too much, which is the same reason I'm not a huge fan of using coliseums either. I personally think the bonus experience concept in the 3D games is probably the best, although not quite as effective.
