Writing? Computer science? XD Sounds like you'll fit right in here (*has an associates in both Journalism and Web Development*) As for cliches. To try to stay away from a good cliche because it's called a cliche is one of the worst crimes that a writer can do, in my opinion. I hate the bad rap a cliche gets. Cliches are only bad if the plot was bad to begin with. Don't believe me? Go back and re-read Harry Potter. The whole series is one big cliche, and every chapter presents new ones. *shrugs* But, fuck if the masses didn't like it, and despite my own personal angst against the books, I doubt anyone is going to try to claim that Rowlings is a poor writer.

And welcome to the forums, mty! Feel free to lurk as much as you want. o_O; Though, it always bothers me when I hear people are just "lurking".
