Zombies are zombies; I don't pay them much attention when they're left to being fodder as they typically are. They're a device for the mindless swarm characterization normally. Plus (re-)killing loved ones is supposed to be haunting or something. Really, I don't hate any of them (zombies, superheroes, aliens etc.) as a device as it's all in execution; the blandest of choices in the world (dragons) can be interesting when pulled off well.
@Ender's Game: Oh Orson Scott Card, you hilariously terrible person you. I don't hate his works (as fiction, anyway) but I can never get behind him as a person. His political agenda is just kind of off to me.
Nothing against dragons, if only because they're eat me whole in one fell swoop, but holy shit everything has dragons. Is it in the past? DRAGONS. Is it a dark medieval fantasy land? DEMON DRAGONS. Post-apocalyptic wasteland? NUCLEAR WASTE DRAGON. High-tech futuristic world? ROBO DRAGON. Gritty real-life drama? GRIT DRAGON.
Fuck this, I'm out ... SAD DRAGON.
^_^ I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE dragons. My passion for them hasn't abated since I watched Rankin Bass's The Hobbit for the first time when I was very young.
Except I like... wild dragons. Not the tame ones that you see with harnesses. And it's not that I want them evil. They are just... them. A godlike sorta creatures. If you dare to face them they might commend your bravery - after they've eaten you whole.
I haven't read a story with dragons where I feel they are properly portrayed, and even in my own stories they are not the dragons that I love.
One day I will write of them, I'm sure. :3

Yeah and, really, they're a main stay since it's a go-to picturesque image of this grand, majestic beast that is everything mythical and legendary wrapped into one figure. It transcends culture for the most part and they're utterly awe inspiring presences that everybody understands.
I still think they're overused.
