I read the Hunger Games trilogy over a weekend a while back after about five people at work suggested it. Once I got over the premise of children fighting to the death (as a potential future parent, I can tell you right now that shit would NOT fly on my watch) and the villain's almost comically overdone personality (one scene in which he was supposed to be all sinister and chilling just had me giggling), I REALLY enjoyed the story and the characters. At one point I even cried.

@Jubelon

The number of books I own and have not yet read is rather astounding, all things considered. I'll probably start Lord of the White Hell next, assuming I don't instead pick up research materials for my writing. Or, ya know, finish the Iliad for school (whaaaaat? oh snap)

@Rook

Yeah, he's difficult -- I'm not a fan of asshole characters. There's a supposedly fantastic book out there called As Meat Loves Salt that's set in 17th century England and features a gay romance, but the main character is an asshole so I've always avoided it. I'm really picky about Rook-like characters; even Felix grates on my nerves sometimes. Then there's the whole... bromance issue.

I'm talking about The Underland Chronicles by Suzanne Collins (before she wrote hunger games)

Oh, man. Now I want to go back and re-read The Last Rune series by Mark Anthony. I remember crying when I finished the last book. And hey! It's got a gay knight in it! Not as good as a wizard, I know, but you've got to give the guy some credit.

Well, I'm done. Only took me forever, but I finished A Dance with Dragons, so I'm all caught up on my Song of Ice and Fire.

I get to sit among the tortured waiting for the 6th book, which I expect to be released around 2525.

My only thought right now is (major spoiler):

So I read the Lord of the White Hell. Not sure how I feel about it, honestly. I liked it enough to order the second book, but I wouldn't say I was OMG excited for it, either. I definitely liked the last quarter of the book, when things really got going, versus a lot of what happens in the first part of the book. Very much a "meh" type reaction from me. I feel a lot of potential got wasted in the setting and premise. I should be jumping all over a boarding-school academy, but it just didn't excite me.

he author has an annoying, bad habit of overly describing everyone's looks and facial expressions. Kiram must be the most incredibly observant person, because the book is full of things like "Javier's eyes flashed momentarily with a look of hurt before his face dissolved into its usual arrogant smirk" -- every 5 pages Javier's eyes or face betrayed some fleeting emotion for half a second before he smirked (always a smirk or grin) It was overdone, overwrought, and very jarring to read. It definitely seemed like the author couldn't think of a way to otherwise show Javier's emotions, so rather than deal with the fact that she had Kiram for a third-person limited narrator the author just told us Javier's emotions as they kept flashing into his eyes.

But, again, I liked it enough to get the sequel, which should be here Thursday.

I'll be reading the Prisoner by Megan Derr meanwhile.

Apparently in my vacation, I have now read Catch-22, Thief of Time, Leviathan, A Game of Thrones in about 11 days, and the only books left to read are A Clash of Kings, and Battle Royale.
