Re: Favorite Books and Current Reads
<_< I dunno why a book has to be "mainstream" to be considered "good".
Hell, I read Jim C. Hines Jig Goblin series and I couldn't put it down... So far with GoT... I couldn't give a shit less. It's like "why am I reading this again..."
I'm trying to enjoy it, I seriously am... but... where's the magic? Where's the fun? I mean by this time in the story at least Goodkind had set Richard up as being the "Truth Seeker" and was pulling off magic and kewl things like that. Even had the beginnings of a great love story.
So far it's just been one intro after another after another after another... fuck, if I wanted the multiple storylines and thousands of characters I'd pick up another Redwall book from Brian Jacques.
-_-; I'm trying, though... I'm still reading... *sigh*

Re: Favorite Books and Current Reads
I never said a book needed to be mainstream to be good. I'm merely stating that mainstream fantasy has a different set of rubric to be judged by, and different readers (ie, more readers, and not just fantasy readers) than niche fantasy or more obscure fantasy. If you asked me my favorite fantasy novels, or even what I consider good fantasy, I'm going to start listing some gay wizards. Duh. And you're not going to agree, and that's fine, because different strokes for different folks.
And Song of Ice and Fire is mainstream. It's a New York Times Bestseller, it's in fucking airport book kiosks, for crying out loud. That's what I'm saying with mainstream; purely a sales figure thing.

If you're expecting magic and stupid bullshit (i.e., every reason why I find fantasy to be a shitty genre) then I'll save you the time. Just stop now. It'll take too long for it to get close to appeasing you in that regard and it probably never would.
Game of Thrones is a book about politics. About characters. About events. Little "kewl" things will happen. This isn't a series about "look at this shit he just did." It's a story about a world and the factions within it. How the events shape the world, how they shape the characters, and how they shape the relationships amongst the characters.

I think people already said what needed to be said about ASOIAF in previous posts. It's a great series if you like how events play out like scy said. I find it amazing that GRRM's able to weave so much detail (sometimes a bit too much) into the series and still maintain consistency and some realism.
I didn't like DwD that much though. I thought the writing and pacing was subpar compared to FfC, but maybe it's because FfC had really awesome perspectives.
Also, I really like my Organic Chemistry textbook. ;_; /nerd

-_- But, but I like those fantasy tropes. I don't get why they are such a bad thing in your guys' eyes. It's boring. Damn, I hate the politics of my world, why the hell would I care about the politics of some other world? It's boring!!

Re: Favorite Books and Current Reads
Speaking of the series, I've read all but Dance with Dragons on my vacation since I couldn't find it anywhere.
I did like how the story hides the more fantastic elements; They're still there, the prophecies, magic, and so on, but in a way to give them a lot more presence. There's the . Oh and the Others, plain disturbing.
Kinda didn't like some of the PoVs at times. Aside from Theon's rather sad part and Victarion's I didn't get the feel of the other two Greyjoys. Arianne's part just seemed so "meh" to me. . That's probably what happens when you kinda want to see the other characters more.
Would like to know what the titular Song of Ice and Fire really is other than some tiny mention.

I edited your post to hide spoilers from the first books. Not sure what Maxine has seen/heard regarding certain elements, but one can never be too careful.
Feast for Crows POVs:
As for the Song of Ice and Fire --
Now that I've finished all the books, I've been eating up speculation, rumors and theories. Everyone else catch the fuck up and break this shit down with me, yo.

I've seen that theory argued to great effect, to the point that I'm damn convinced that's the truth of the matter.

Re-read the first Xanth series book: A Spell for Chameleon. Books 2-4 are on the way.
