@genre fiction
to think that literary fiction is not also a genre is fucking laughable. All fiction fits into a formula, there's nothing wholly original, etc. And that's fine.
Mr Kino and I agree that it's entirely silly for the literary community to think they're somehow better than "genre" fiction, but go figure.
As for where I work, we do not keep genre fiction. We have the small fantasy section, no horror section, no romance section. We do keep a mystery section, but it's more... classy than your typical mystery section. More Leon, Camilleri, Black, and LeCarre, less "punny" serial mystery like the Cat Who or whatever.
I just roll my eyes and sell the stuff. It's better than having to pretend to be interested in Amish Christian Romantic Fiction.

"urban fantasy" I don't think I've ever read any to be honest. Not for lack of interest but just that my interest hasn't taken me there yet.
I like stuff with wit and humor. If it has a lot of politics crap, forget it, I'm not going to enjoy it. I also like things to have a new and interesting twist. (for instance I read a book synopsis the other day that was a vampire book - you would think *yawn* right? but it was funny because the vampire was the WORST vampire ever and was in danger of being kicked out/killed. :3 THAT seems promising - except o_o I can't remember the book's title or even if I read it in material form, on my nook (it's not in my wishlist, though), or if it was a random author who followed me for a few days to plug his book (something that started happening after adding a few others to my follows list), or if I saw it on good reads.
Umm, but moving beyond that. That's basically my criteria. Witty, fun, lots of action.
...Does Sherrilyn Kenyon count as urban fantasy. :3 ... ... I have a lot of fun reading her books (though she follows too much of a recipe that is starting to get old...).
Its not that I "prefer" high fantasy with full world building. It's just that's usually what piques my interest. I also am an absolute fanatic for that magical moment when someone realizes they have a talent and/or are "the one". You may think it's cliche by now but I absolutely cannot get enough of it. Damn, Ranger's Apprentice was the best for that. When Will is caught by Halt in the first few chapters. <3 Delicious. That FOREVER remains my favorite scene.
Favorite YA books over the years that I HIGHLY recommend:
Dealing with Dragons by Patricia Wrede
Salamandastron by Brian Jacques (you don't have to read the whole series. Each book is an individual for the most part)
Goblin Quest by Jim C. Hines
Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer
Spell for Chameleon by Piers Anthony (debatably YA... more like "teen"...)
And of course Percy Jackson: The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan
Ranger's Apprentice: Ruins of Gorlan by John Flanagan

In other news... went to barnes and noble to do some reading today while my mom went around shopping.
Realized o_o they had a buy 2 get 1 free sale on classic literature.
<_<;; saaaallllleeeee......
Ended up purchasing Moby Dick, Count of Monte Cristo, and Three Musketeers. All of which are books I've never read but mean to... eventually...
Not to mention I still need to update my list to include the fact that I'm reading Dracula which was one of the freebies that came with my nook.
^_^; I have a great current reads list. Classic literature beside Warriors (cats), Son of Neptune, Ranger's Apprentice, and Squire's Tale, and a Sherrilyn Kenyon novel.
Eheh... I'm only going to actually put Dracula and ONE of those books on my current reads list. I'm actually including a new category on my good reads account. On/Off Reads. For those books that I AM currently reading but just have no desire to do so at that particular moment. o_O; or something...

Yeah good luck reading Moby Dick. I'd rather shoot myself in the face than read that bloated piece of crap.
/awful anti-classics kino
Dumas is pretty fun, though.

? Really? I remember reading the first few chapters when I was in middle school and I recall that I was enjoying it immensely. Especially the part where Ishmael wakes up with an unexpected guest in his bed in an unexpected way. :3
But I am starting with Count of Monte Cristo first. I've only seen snatches of an old movie and know bare minimum of the story. Felt that was the one story I knew the least about.

Hrrrm... that's a pity. Maybe I should be afraid about what I'm getting myself into. However, I AM slightly interested in the subject. I dunno. We'll see when I reach the book, I guess. But also: SHIPS!!! (I have mentioned that I AM mildly interested in seafaring life? And is one of the reasons that I love Wind Waker so much. Ships interest me FAR more than do horses.)
*sigh* So... -_-; I've finished Ranger's Apprentice: Lost Stories. MY GOD what a good read. Every single one of them were delightful. I do, wish, however, that "The Hibernian" had been further embellished. :3 I think I would like to see a whole book/series on Halt and Crowely's past and how they took down Morgarath.
I liked, in particular, the one called "The Wolf" because it brought up a subject I have often wondered about and it was fun to see that a random fan letter had gotten the author's imagination to work out a problem that had never occurred to him before then.
Either way, it was a great farewell. :3 I'm ALSO even more delighted by the single paragraph that we got for his new book series which confirmed one single thing: who the book is about. And quite possibly it's within the same timeline as the RA series. <3 So... maybe there's the possibility of return characters? Meh, whatever. I shouldn't think like that. This is a wonderful author and I can't wait to meet the new characters and read the stories he has in store for us.
That being said, I'm tempted to wait before picking up and actually making progress through Son of Neptune. I'm thinking of postponing it and reading Dracula ahead of it. I'm in the seasonal mood for a vampire book and... o_O; I don't want to finish the book in a day like I've done with Lost Stories and have to wait THAT MUCH LONGER FOR THE NEXT BOOK!! O_O;;
.... but of course, who knows what my mood will bring me tomorrow. ....
Seriously thinking about going back through the RA series from the beginning....
... T-T I'm going to miss Will!! And Horace!! And..... Halt!!!!!!
... FUCK!! I ended up crying at the end of the book... *sigh* -_-; I hate ending series. It feels like I'm saying farewell to a bunch of really close friends.
