Re: Favorite Books and Current Reads
I would think that mystery novels and the like fall into the category of "sequels" and not "series" -- fantasy especially just too often falls into the trilogy trap, in which the first book just sets up later events, and the whole story is incomplete without the following titles. Mystery novels in a series do share the same protagonist, gimmick, and setting (she's a minnesota baker who solves murders and flirts with the handsome sheriff! he's a lone-wolf FBI agent whose criminal nemesis killed his wife!) but for the most part the first book stands alone -- the author doesn't always have a book contrast for the sequels, after all, but they do want to set up a hook and gimmick for that sequel opportunity.
Same I would say about something like, say, Havemercy -- plenty of room for a sequel, and there are books that follow it, but the first novel stands alone as a complete story. You could stop there and be satisfied with the resolution of the plot and the character's individual struggles.
I agree with Maxine and Scy; the nature of the club is to read niche or lesser known titles that, outside of the book club, you may not otherwise select for yourself. I don't want to put too many restrictions, but the only one I feel very strongly about is length, and I'm pleased that (so far) no one seems to object to that one.
As for the discussion, I think the forum provides the perfect means. Coordinate a time an date for an IRC chat would be too difficult, I think. Like I said, I'd start a spin-off thread and keep the discussion there, so as not to clutter this thread, and so that we could discuss without worry about spoilers. I had the idea that we'd set a "meeting" deadline, all read the book, and then start discussing it on that day. No one can talk about the book on ITL until we've all finished reading it. The person who chose the book could post a list of prompts/questions or discussion if they wanted, or we could just dive right into it.
Example, we're reading The Book by Author chosen by Maxine, and set Never 23rd as the "meeting" date. On Never 23rd, Maxine posts a list of discussion prompts, and then we all start discussing it. Discussion ends when we run out of steam, or start the next book, whatever comes first. We could discuss The Book all the way up to the next meeting, if we wanted!
Now that I know there's interest, I'm going to start the Book Club thread!

I'm sure there's other methods of obtaining, such as a local library or...certain means.

One of the rules is that members must be able to find the book through the library. There's always inter-library loan, too, if you have a small or limited selection at your library! I don't want to bankrupt anyone, or force people to go out and buy a bunch of books. Libraries are a great resource, and anyone can get a library card. If you have the internet, you have access to a library.

Re: Favorite Books and Current Reads
So, one time I loaned my copy of Writing Down the Bones to ze boyfran. His car is... death to all items because he tosses things in the back seat and then drives like a maniac and throws other things on top of the things already in the seat... and since it is such a tiny edition of the book he would carry it in his apron pocket when working at the restaurant. As expected, when he returned it to me it had quite a few stains, bumps, scratches - but I wasn't angry. No, I saw this as a test. A test to see if I might be able to repair this beloved book. And so, ItL, I present to you, lovingly rebound by yours truly, Writing Down the Bones, the Trifkin edition:
EDIT:
For reference, this is close to what it looked like before:
That isn't my exact copy, but it might as well have been.

Re: Favorite Books and Current Reads
Does it I thought the book club followed a specific reading regiment. I am actually reading something different than the club. I have been reading the IS(infinite stratos) lite novel at the baka-tsuki. I am liking the quick reads the books are short so you can finish them in about 1.5 days if your reading at a good pace.
Zeta look cute fillies.

? How does this topic die? I could see if more posts were being posted in that subforum, but they are not. And what's more, I just created the subforum not even, what, three days ago? Also, I doubt very much that it will kill this thread since I know that now that I am done reading the book club book I am back to reading my other materials.
Have finally decided to break into reading the newest Heroes of Olympus book. I can no longer put it off <3 I gotta know what happens to Percy and Jason.

Hmm, that isn't even two weeks. I don't see much difference in post frequency with before.
