You my good sir are woefully uneducated to this age group. I shudder to think what books you might be reading:
I highly recommend (first the obvious ones):
The Ranger's Apprentice series
Percy Jackson series
Ok, now that those are out of the way...
Beyonders series is fun so far
Cornelia Funke (any of her books... especially Dragon Rider and Inkheart)
Familiars <3333 OMG THIS BOOK IS ADORABLE!! I want to read the next one but it's much too expensive in my opinion
Goblin Quest <333 A very big twist on classic stories.
Maze Runner ... though maybe this is more 15-16 age group... hrrrm...
Oh and... the Warriors series. I know... I know... but seriously give them a try! XD They are more fun than you would expect!

OH!! OMG I'm missing a good one. It's a little bit on the aged side, so I dunno if it fits in with our argument BUT The Enchanted Forest Chronicles by Patricia Wrede. <3

^_^; Think I'm going to have to agree with you there.
I love the story. The wild adventures~ The strangeness of the worlds~ The lovable characters~
The odder it is the better - and don't make it too technical. I don't care HOW the magic worked... well, I mean I do A LITTLE if it enhances things... just that it can do things like turn rabbits into donkeys, turn them technicolor, and make them fly (Enchanted Forest reference... I swear to GOD that book had me rolling around on the floor laughing so hard).
Also, I like it light and fun... Harry Potter was good up until the fourth book when it went all dark and OMG WIZARD WAR AND EVERYBODY DIES FOR THE SHEER HELL OF IT DRAMA!!
Srsly... wizard war.... what a turn off.

Have you read The Stars My Destination by Alfred Bester? If you like sci-fi, it certainly fits the thought provoking, controversial and mixed emotions criteria. I loved it, anyway. Fair warning: you may not, but I absolutely hated the main character at the beginning of the book. But I think you're kind of supposed to, otherwise the rest of the book wouldn't be as rewarding.

I don't like aliens in my scifi. Firefly > Star Trek/Wars any day for me. I love anything apocalypse, though.

All this talking about young adult book series reminded me of the Leviathan trilogy, by Scott Westerfeld: Leviathan, Behemoth, and Goliath. They're about an alternate history reimagining of World War One. The two sides are the Darwinists, whose technology is a result of genetic engineering invented by Charles Darwin, and the Clankers, whose technology is all steampunk walkers and warships.
The main characters, who are great, pretty much end up travelling the entire world in a living airship. The books also include gorgeous illustrations of the events, sort of like a Japanese light novel.
Anyways, I highly recommend the series to anyone who likes steampunk or alternate history.

I hate aliens. It's a big fucking turn off.
Star Wars is the only scifi thing I've ever been able to tolerate, but if you ever handed me one of the books I would probably never touch it.
^_^ Wands, talking boats, fairies, goblins, fairies, dragons, fairies.... dragons.... dragons & fairies.... elves maybe though they are becoming too cliche (CHECK YOUR TOLKIEN ELVES AT THE DOOR PLEASE). ... Uhh... :3 did I say dragons and fairies? ^_^ Especially dragons. <3 I know... maybe they are a little cliche but... THEY ARE DRAGONS!!! ... .... I love dragons <3
There are not enough books with fairies in them.
Oh, but I hate OMG-MAGIC-ENDING-APOCALYPSE stories. I hate the feeling that this world is just disappearing. It breaks the reason why I'm reading it: to imagine that this stuff is real <3
... However, if you hand me a real world Apocalypse story I might be vaguely interested... depending on the intelligence of the characters... I think "post-apocalypse" is probably more the word for me. >:] YOUR REAL WORLD SHIT HAS JUST GONE DOWN... NOW SURVIVE! I like this.
However, seriously, I'm too busy with my magic, so after the first few chapters I might end up putting it down.
Also, I don't like wars. Did I not get this across with Harry Potter? Uggg, I LOVE Redemption of Althalus but my god, the middle portion with the war almost made me put the book away. I don't mind a war IN the book, as long it's a sort of... backdrop. Kinda like Tolkien or Belgariad. You HEARD about the wars, but you were rarely, if ever, shoved into it. Percy Jackson gets a pass on its war. I thought it was tastefully done with enough humor in it to drive away the bs.
^_^ Also I love humor the most. The four books of the Enchanted Forest Chronicles were very short (the omnibus is actually normal book size), but my GOD they were delicious and fucking funny. Goblin Quest, too. XD
Piers Anthony did some insane shit in his Xanth series, but I later as the years moved on I've come to wish he treated women with a little more dignity. I've not read a single book of his in years. The Ranger's Apprentice series had some good witty zingers in it. ^_^ I'm also the type of reader that I will laugh out loud when I'm reading... and talk to the book sometimes, yelling at the characters. And, yes, I cry. .... :3 I love books that make me emotional.
I've not tried SteamPunk but what Teri just showed there was intriguing. I would want to give a try. I enjoyed the Temeraire series.... I dunno if that counts?
