Yeah, when I ever do picture characters, it's either whoever was in the movie or someone I know that either remotely resembles the character or has a similar name.
As for my focus, I don't get overly absorbed most of the time. I'll snap out of it when someone says my name usually. Or if the people near me are having a conversation I can kind of follow along while I read. But then I tune out and tune back in and it's like what the hell lol.

It's like "so close... Nessy has the potential...."
The "tune out and tune back in" gets me every time. I'm like "one more sentence... I can do both at the same time." then suddenly it's like "O_O ... uhh... what are the talking about again?" .... Then I do a quick sneak of the time. If it was only a minute ago, I don't panic too much and feel like I'm still part of the conversation and anything I throw back out won't be TOO far off the mark... anything past that and I feel like I should go for a bathroom break to hide my disassociation. ^_^;

For me it would depend on the class. I very rarely would slack during a history class. Something like Geology and Human Affairs in a huge auditorium? I'm writing. He better be grateful I showed up at all.
On topic, I started a new book last night; Scarlet and the White Wolf. I'm only about 75 pages into it, but it's ... meh. Poorly written with lots of novice mistakes (info-dumping like CRAZY since it's a fantasy the author wants to establish the various cultures, but huge passages feel like travelogue excerpts) However, I like it and there's gay wizards, so I'm willing to put up with that.
