I picked up Stone of Tears about a week ago and finished the ~700 pages I had left. It was pretty good. The amount of reader face-palm moments was truly staggering. It felt like Goodkind used dramatic irony a bit too much.
Richard was cute when he was (understandably) being a bitch, though. And then Verna was a bitch back and now I prefer Richard/[s]Warren[/s]Verna to Richard/Kahlan. [hide]You know, the canon couple. Nice exchange at the end, there. "Woah, if you suck on my nipple, I better be able to suck on yours." And then they fucked.[/hide]
Also, is it just me, or is Richard coming off as a bit of a Mary Sue/Gary Stu? I mean, he's pretty much the chosen one and keeps on beating previous records of learning by a hundred or so years, but whatever.
I mean, I still enjoyed it; I was just accentuating the negative.

I disagree with Maxine. Good characters should not be Mary Sues.
It's a problem that plagues most fantasy main characters though.
And Richard is a total fucking Gary Stu. [hide]Every woman he encounters wants to marry him or -- fuck -- does marry him. He gets every super power. Is rarely wrong. Saves the world. Etc etc[/hide].
And deus ex machina is just weak story telling.

It's typically pleasing to know the character you are reading about is a flawed, unique person and not just a Mary Sue/Gary Stu
and it's typically pleasing when a conflict is resolved by the character's skill (or the writer's wit) and not by a deus ex machina
and neither of those are weak storytelling
