Ellimist chronicles takes place long before the main series though, actually, I think all of the "chronicles" installments did.

Most mainstream mystery novels are more of a "see them solve it" then a "let you solve it" type thing. Usually there's some clue or knowledge that you aren't privy to until the end, when the narrator sums up the case for you.

Of course there are probably some that do let you solve it, but I don't read much mystery. I never really enjoyed them. My co-worker's really into this series that has dessert recipes scattered throughout, though.
