You can, if you copy the link or right-clicking and opening in a new tab/window.
And one can always put a thumbnail in a post and then have a text link above or below it to the full image.

Photobucket has an option to make thumbnails of your images, and I think Imageshack does too.
@Negzee - For one-offs I'd just use GPhoto or Gimp if something more fancy is wanted. Batch thumbnailing I haven't needed yet, so I haven't looked into Imagemagick. You could also just raid ~/.thumbnails of course.

imgur.com also has a quick thumbnail option. I use it to quickly resize camera pictures.
