Most newspapers have websites now, Kino. It's why I had to take a website course in my Journalism curriculum. In fact, it gives more positions in an odd way. Print Designers =/= Site Designers and they are generally horrid at the job. (Believe me, I know, I've seen it). :\ Yes the newspaper industry itself is going out, but, unless they are complete idiots, the company itself really isn't all that baddly in the red zone.

Actually, ad revenue is down for newpapers and magazines, pretty much all print media. Web-based advertising just doesn't generate the money necessary to continue the print production. The newspaper industry is in serious trouble -- several papers have declared bankruptcy given the current economic downturn, and several more are having to acquire patron funding. I don't remember which paper, but recently a major one was sold to the richest man in Mexico.
The NYTimes, maybe? I don't remember. Anyway, print media of all kinds is in serious danger. There isn't isn't the ad revenue that they depend on. Competency doesn't have anything to do with it. The papers that are doing well are media giants that have funding from alternative industries -- companies that just run a paper, however, are in critical financial state. There's no money to be made on the web for them.
