My guess it they wanted to make it so little kids can watch it, because they showed it in the afternoon anime programme of pretty much the only free TV programme with anime. Thankfully, that sorta changed and we have a different programme from a different TV station now, but they still have to use that version of Naruto because bullshit.

Of course, the kind of anime that's shown on mainstream TV during daytime (except for Japan obviously) isn't really the best kind of anime to begin with..

Naruto was pretty good up to the horrible fillers which were then followed by DBZ...I mean Shippuuden.

I thought the title character was too much of an annoying little shit for the series to be enjoyable, most of the other members of the main cast were kind of lameoids too, particularly the female characters who do nothing but fawn over members of the male cast and be useless.

If you put it that way...I gotta agree, yeah. Sakura got a slight boost when she cut her hair and decided to be more useful (which didn't happen until Shippuuden...), but yeah. Only male character I really like was Shikamaru. Dude got power, intelligence, and he's freaking lazy.

The only character I remember particularly liking when I watched it was their instructor, Kakashi, I think?

The dude was nice, aye, but I disliked the idea of "Oh he's a super awesome strong dude who don't give no shit about nothing cause he's always late and reading naughty books". I like characters with a decent balance between strengths and flaws, and he was just a bit too strong for those minor flaws.

To be fair, he was a seasoned veteran rather than an uninitiated trainee like most of the cast.

His background doesn't make it any better though. Of course the dude was a freaking genius who got promoted to a high rank at a very young age, had a "tragic" past with his dad dying and his best friend being crushed by a rock and entrusting him with his only functioning eye left which ultimately turned into his greatest weapon...I just don't like characters like that.
