For those who don't get the big deal:

The FGC (fighting game community) is among the most vile gaming communities in the world. They are immensely racist, sexist, and when it comes to Marvel vs Capcom scene they are outright violent. What is more is, even though plenty of companies have fed millions to the community for years, developers get on a knee to listen to them, and many organizations have done all they can to make it more professional, much of the FGC scoffs at the concept of "eSports". They make a mockery of it all the time. There is a grand scale "we don't need them" kind of attitude.

So to see Nintendo, a very family friendly company, wanting to even associate themselves with an event that is easily the biggest FGC event of the year, is surprising. It's only surprising because, prior to maybe three months ago, Nintendo has been perceived as about as out-of-touch as a game company can get.

It would seem that they have reassessed their company image, and have tried to make it seem less stiff and distant. From a marketing standpoint, getting a brand logo and shoutouts at an event that will be seen by over a million eyes and shake up social media is of course a brilliant strategy. It's just surprising.

I am happy with the Smash community, as a subset of the FGC. It has that "small community feeling", like a game that doesn't have a big player base, where everyone is more helpful and welcoming just because they will take whatever they can get. Smash historically has been almost like the warrior way of old, with hosting culture being way more common than other games. We still have some stinks every now and then, but overall much better attitudes than other games. The levels of salt seen with big games like Street Fighter or Marvel is a rarity.

I'm a member of the SmashBoards staff, so I get to watch over the online actions of thousands of concurrent users at even the latest hours, and I'm happy with what I see. We have very family-friendly rules and policies, and our biggest streaming platforms share many of the same rules. The results have shown themselves, with lots of money coming into the game and plenty of professional organizations wanting to get involved. It's great exposure for their sponsors and something they can comfortably associate themselves with. If the rest of the FGC would be willing to clean their act, it could only serve to bring similar growth.
