*mutters* So my sister is getting into Yugioh card game ... and I've agreed to be her buddy while playing it.

*sigh* The last two weeks she's been teaching me what her boyfriend taught her. Slowly overtime I've gotten out of her that her boyfriend is actually fuzzy on many details and that being a newbie herself she keeps forgetting rules herself (it's like the blind teaching the blind).

She got two structure decks yesterday with rule books (her card up to now is what she was given from her boyfriend who no longer really plays). I wanted to read the rule books but she was anxious so we played the card game all day yesterday. Then last night she performed an attack on one of my attack cards and suddenly went wide eyed. "ooh... I forgot... the rest of the attack damage hits the opponent" Me: "...Excuse me?" (mind you we've been playing ALL DAY) Her: "omg we've not been doing that at all today have we." Me: "Uhh... no...." Her: "I just realized it!"

Sighing, I grab the rule book and flip over to the part about the actual battle phase - the part I figured she would have the most CORRECT since UH DUH! that's the main point of the game. I confirmed what she read and then continued reading about attacking defense... "Oh... so... if I attack you and your card is more powerful in defense I get hurt with the rest of that calculation. You never mentioned that either."

To be honest, I suspect her boyfriend of cheating, though she's giving him the benefit of the doubt. But it was funny because she had told me that she had created a deck initially of more defense. She made the comment last night jokingly that "Wow... I could have actually bested him with that deck I think." Me: "You don't think maybe that's why he didn't tell you?" Her: "Nah, I'm sure he probably just forgot."

..... .... That's a pretty big detail. BOTH were pretty big details.

-_-; *sigh* I went through and read all of the rule book AND also watched an online demo last night on the main site. Turns out we've been doing SEVERAL things incorrectly. *mutters* This is why I wanted to read the rules FIRST. UGGGGG!!

I'm going to sit her down and watch the online demo. It was done in kiddy style so it was incredibly easy to understand and was a quick watch and will be better than ME trying to explain it. ... I'm so annoyed at the moment. LOL.

If the monster card is in attack and is attacked by a monster with higher attack (|) you take the difference out of your 8000 life points. If it is in defense (—) you take no battle damage. Message me on a chat program sometime and I cane explain the rules better than the 8.0 rule booklet.

Likewise if you can get a hold of me, I can explain more specific rulings and stuff.

I don't know if you've run into Synchros or Xyz monsters yet, but here's the general gist of those:

Synchros are addition problems. X level tuner + Y Level non tuner = Z Level Synchro
Xyzs require two or more of the same leveled monster to get a ranked monster equal to their levels. (It should be noted that Ranks are not Levels.)



You can use this site to look up rulings for specific cards, as well as learn the game mechanics in another way. (And oh dear lord if the battle phase isn't the most complicated thing in the game, I don't know what is.)

^ Also, stuff your deck full of cards. That way, you have no idea what you're going to draw. :3

This applies to all cardgames with variable decksizes.

^True, though I think the latest starters did come with a little bit of the newer stuff.

Not Atlantean or Fire Kings, at least. That's what me and my cousins have. I now have a fairly ok Atlantean deck and my cousin has a fucking insane Fire Kings. Tip: Buy 3 of the same starter for a solid deck. 1 starter won't cut it once you know the basics and find other opponents.

I also have a shitty rock deck that I'm working on.

What decks do you have, Liferake? And Maxine.

I run a deck based on swarming with low level Atlanteans that all give each other attack bonuses and then use my field card A Legendary Ocean to lower the level of all water monsters and pull out my 3 Rage of the Deep Seas for around 3000-8000 attack each. (The gain 500 atk/def for every water type monster in my graveyard.) So, I consider a 5-star monster my boss monster even though I have higher-level guys in my deck.¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This deck isn't the most competitive, but it has options both early and late game, which can't be said of every deck. Although I did get fucked by the September banlist, it made 2 of the best swarming cards limited.

Also I absolutely need a Neo-Daedalus, holy crap.

My cousin/the person I play most with runs a Fire Kings deck, his got an amazing deck for 33 dollars. (3 of the Fire Kings starters, I guess he has a few new guys from boosters though.) I also regularly play with a guy with an old-school fire deck, and a guy with an absolutely lethal deck based around spells and traps and all the cheapest monsters in the game

The people I played in highschool who I probably won't see much now ran dinosaurs, an old-school dragon deck, a dragunity deck a newer zombie deck, and a weird ritual deck.

I have a few Karakuri monsters, when I'll snap some pics and see if you want any.
