I didn't originally read that particular post, just the latest stuff from that person. It doesn't seem like the point of the piece was about whether or not people are getting accommodated. It sounds more like a "please don't refer to us using this phrase 'cause here's what it implies," kind of piece. I had no idea that was an offensive phrase. I've heard parents call their children that.

^ Yeah. "Highfunctioning" seems like an accurate enough term for not needing much accommodation out of the ordinary. It could be argued that the "high-" implies amazement at an autistic being able to cope like that, I suppose.
I wonder how the category breaks down, though. Is it an informal, relative term? Or is it specific to those who need nothing special, a certain amount of accommodation, or certain types of accommodation?
I've seen professionals juggle different terms like they're an awkward fit for what they're trying to say, which I guess may be relevant to the DSM deciding to simplify it.

^ Or the term is poorly defined with pockets of vague concensus, even among psychologists and autistics. But I'm repeating myself.
You are the first I've seen pose "highfunctioning" as "processes data better than the average person". It's more often been contrasting some group of autistics with another, with various dividing lines.

Dumb question from a newbie but. Is this the 'chat' thread for the site?

^ Nobody knows. Some say it's a natural formation. Some say it's a relic of ages past. Legends tell of a fated turnip. But its secrets have never been uncovered.

Gosh, what better time than now to plunder it for secrets it might hold. Or it could be a start to a never ending journey of chasing false leads. I'll return when I've given up on chasing the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow to cover education expenses.

I feel really slow on the uptake right now. A blind gentleman with a seeing eye dog came in yesterday. His dog's name was Seymour.
Seymour, guys.
Pronounced See-more.
See more. And I just got it.

Trifkin: Well found XD
Just read "erection" instead of "excitement" (I was reading a French article about how developers communicate about their games), looks like I should get some sleep...
