.... *hides her heart-shaped box of chocolates behind her back*
I gave my fiance a box of strawberry Meltyblend. I spent nearly two hours combing the Asia Town in OKC looking for the right combination of strawberry delicious and dark chocolate goodness.
Also, it came in a cute pink box.

We used to always get a real tree... My dad would march off into the woods and just cut down one of the ones on our land. We never paid for a real tree. A few years ago my parents switched to a fake one. They don't bother to dis-assemble it though, they just stick it in my old room with a plastic bag over it.
But, yeah, I agree that the crazy commercialism of our holidays is disgusting. The idea of a consumer economy seems wasteful to me. I don't think that we should need people to waste money on stupid shit -- and the jobs it creates are low-paying, shitty retail jobs. Those aren't at all positive to society.

I'm all for using fake trees, but christmas tree farms are pretty much the same as animal farms. I mean, you can only eat a cow once. The difference is that meat is good for us (and is delicious), while we really don't need to use real trees for anything. Every time my family used a fake tree, it didn't take away from the feeling of Christmas...
But seriously, don't get rid of holidays just because of american mania. Too much happiness and joy comes from those ancient celebrations to worry about little things like mass consumer greed.

I love real trees a lot more, but have nothing against fake trees.
<3 Real trees are more fun to get since it's a nice little family outting and when we get back, we sip on hot cocoa, listen to xmas songs and munch on snacks while we are bringing it in and setting it up in the water basin. It just adds a lot more fun to the occassion, I feel.
As for over-commercialization...
I love walking into stores and seeing and "feeling" the christmas buzz. Sure, everything has its dark side, but honestly, I'd miss it. Sure there are things that you would never buy but I think it's fun to see those sorts of things, too.
