Good point on the temporary forest, Kimiko. I was reading the other day about the Cork Forests in Portgual and how cork harvesting is like super ecologically sustainable. The forest creates a habitat for many animals, including the endangered Iberian Lynx. Although to harvest cork you don't need to cut down the trees, you just merely remove the cork bark from the tree. Bottom line: buy wine that uses REAL corks, not some plasticky alternative or screw top.
On the matter of real-tree disposal; we always burned ours. Yay bonfire! Or, in the wood stove. Mmmmm heat.
Right now, I'm writing this from my front porch. My little plot of mysteriouslyunknown grass -- green and beautiful despite all other grass in Oklahoma being dead right now -- is dotted with wild onions. They'll smell, sharp and familiar, whenever I trim the grass in a few weeks. The tree in my yard is housed with several birds right now, fluttering about and chirping. It's very peaceful, despite the terrible sounds of distant cars and someone's motor -- a lawnmower? A chainsaw? I can't tell, but I can here it below the calls of the birds.
I don't know what kinds of birds. There's one that is very familiar to me: "Wheee-wooo, chekekekeke" - it's a sound I recognize as Spring slowly arriving.
ETA:
There is this sweet little kitty in my neighborhood. I've met her once before, but on Friday I coaxed her into letting me shower her with love and attention. Just now I saw her walking in the street, so I called out to her. She rushed up the driveway, hopped the fence, and we cuddled around for a while. She then explored the porch/yard and finally settled on to the back of the porch-sofa to sit with me for a bit. Now she is across the street, slowly creeping up on a leaf.
I've lost sight of her around the corner. I hope to see her again soon, knowing now that we are good friends and that she will come will I call her.
<3 I have the magic power to make all cats love me.
ETA2:
Having vanquished the leaves, the kitty is returning to her home. She came up the driveway and peered at me, but no more cuddles. She seems to be going back home... Wherever that is. She's clearly fed and loved, but has no collar. While I'm grateful to have the opportunity to love on her, I do wish her owners were more responsible and kept her inside rather than letting her wander.
