More on the whole "decades" thing...

I understand by "1970s" people mean "1970-1979," but I don't understand what people mean by "the" decade. A decade can be any period of 10 years. There is no set "decade." When I hear about "the" decade I usually think of the actual decades, like 1991-2000, and whatnot.

But with terms like 21st century, that refers to an actual period of 100 years, 2001-2100, and should only be viewed like this.

A decade is any period of 10 years; "THE" decade, as referenced with 2010 coming meaning the end of the decade before, references the 10 year period of 2000 to 2009 (much like 2000 ending the 1990 - 1999 period). The term decade is used to reference the X0 to X9 period (hence 30s, 40s, 50s, etc.). It is a social construct, yes, but it's a widely known one.

And, yes, centuries do work in the 1 - 0 period (2001 - 2100 is the 21st Century, for example).
