*sigh* So, it's been about a year since my laptop fan started to give me issues with making an insane whirling noise. But it was manageable and I could make it stop the noise if I hit my laptop in the right spot. Then it stopped altogether making the noise. Then about three weeks ago the noise came back and wouldn't stop. I knew it was about to give up the good fight.

Yesterday my sister and her friend were playing on my laptop when I came home and I no sooner sat down when they were surprised when my laptop suddenly just shut down abruptly. I realized T-T oh god, I didn't hear the fan when I walked in the room and Rissa confirmed "Oh! No, you're right. It has been quiet today." I lifted up my comp and sure enough - hot. And after letting it cool down and opening it back up, the fan refuses to work.

Went out and purchased one of those fans you sit the laptop on, but honestly, I'd rather fix my laptop. Anyone know how I go about figuring out what part I need and where to go for it? Parents said they asked (I'm assuming which store) at Best Buy and they had no clue.

Anyways I was going to get my homework done as fast as I could this weekend and try to get my dad to open it up and see if there's some model number or something that I need. Any advice anyone could give me on the situation would be greatly appreciated. I saw a few sites online that had replacement parts but o_O the last thing I wanna do is give my card information to an unsafe site that I am not familiar with and potentially order the wrong part.

I can look around for you, but I'd need to know the brand and model for that.

For most laptops, you'll need to remove the keyboard (remove a few screws on the backside, possibly the front panel) to get a look at the fan. To actually replace it, or if you can't see the part number from the top, you'll probably need to remove a lot more parts (more like take almost the whole thing apart). Unless your dad or you have experience tinkering with the insides of laptops, you'd better go to a computer shop to have them replace the fan.

^_^ My dad is an elctronics technician. While it's not computers that he specializes in, breaking into it to replace parts and/or do some soddering or replace a fuse (he had to replace the fuse in my playstation 2 when it blew and controllers no longer vibrated).

<_<; I dropped my laptop once and something came loose in it and the screen did not display. He had to fix that. Not to mention my first ever accident with my laptop in which my headphone jack became broken. This is not the first time we will be breaking into my laptop.

It's kinda funny actually. My dad could repair anything you'd think inside a computer, possibly custom build it if he had the mind to, but he has NO CLUE about the software. T-T He SUCKS with using the internet and his typing skills are slim to none.

Yeah, I already figured I'd need to break in for the model number, but thanks for the confirmation ^_^. I didn't know if there just the computer model was the only thing needed. I'll have him break into it tonight or tomorrow (or whenever he gets around to it) and I'll pop back on with the model number and brand.

I meant the brand and model number of your laptop. You should be able to tell that from the outside, right?

My laptop is an HP Pavilion 5000 :3

Are you sure that's the complete model info? HP seems to have several Pavilion <letter><letter>5000 notebook series. There's a label with some barcodes on the back side. What does it say there? And what's the P/N on that label?

ETA: It looks like the HP Pavilion *5000* notebooks are discontinued models. It's HP though, so spare parts are easy to find. The fan is a cheap part; they seem to go for about $19. Good thing your dad is handy with a screwdriver though, because it'd probably be costly to have a paid technician replace the fan. As I expected, you have to take apart practically the whole thing to do that. You could buy a notebook with a working fan second-hand for that price.

Yay temporary tech support thread. I have an Alienware laptop, It's the M9700 Aurora with the single GS 7900 Video card not two. The processor is AMD turion 64 ML-34 Codename Lancaster according to CPUZ.

Obviously I am far too poor to have afforded this when it came out but a couple of years ago I recieved it as a handmedown from a friend. It has a sleep mode issue i've never been able to figure out. It used to have hard drive problems until I replaced it and reinstalled windows. But whenever it enters sleep mode or hibernates it gets to the login screen and then immediately freezes before I can get a couple of keypresses off into the password line. And then it won't respond to anything. I can't restore from hibernation or anything on startup I always have to manually power it off if it manages to shut off like that. I've since disabled sleep mode so the only time it ever happens is when its running out of battery.

The other thing is the processor after some research lists it as 64 bit compatible. I'm not sure if it was just the fact 64 bit wasn't mainstream or popular yet or if it was never meant to be used as such. But it came with vista 32 bit and it's currently using 7 32 bit, i'm wondering if 64 bit 7 will work since I might get more out of the CPU.

...do you mean RAM? And that's only relevant if you have over 4 GB (well, 3-some GB but technicalities blahblahblah).

As for the hibernation issue, I remember the 93/94 driver revisions had an issue with freezing upon hibernation/waking up so it may be worth looking into updating those. Besides that, your RAM could be going bad so you could run diagnostics on that.

When did the problem start? Before or after the HDD swap?

I'm only 10 credit hours away from my degree. I got my letter from the university today letting me know that if I complete them before the end of the summer semester I'll graduate.
