My neighbour is trying to set me up with one of her co-workers. I'm not sure how I should feel about this.
Also, I watched Footloose for the millionth time today.
The two are not necessarily related.

So, had an unusual dream last night, possibly fever-induced. I did managed to pick out the gist of the story, but most importantly, I got the magic system:
1. First off, you need to have the Idea. This is the concept of the magic- the sensation, the theme, the function, etc. The Idea can't be created, it can only happen by inspiration.
[hide]Most people have two or three Ideas. They tend to follow some internal theme, but not always. Even children can get Ideas, but until ages 10-12, they are unable to form Contracts.[/hide]
2. Next, you need to find a fitting Medium. Any object can be a medium, so long as it feels symbolic of the Idea. You can't try to force it, when you find the right one, you'll feel it immediately. Just because one works doesn't mean it's the only one that can work, of course.
[hide]It's best to pick something easy to carry, and that you won't regret carrying around in five years. Once you form the Contract, you can't change your medium, so choose carefully.[/hide]
3. When you have the Idea and the right Medium, you can form the Contract. The Idea and the Medium together give birth to the third part: the Incantation, a word or phrase in whatever language you are most comfortable with. This includes nonverbal forms such as sign language and written language.
[hide]The Incantation usually serves as the spell's name. Mumbling, whispering, or botching the words doesn't usually impair the casting. The language of the Incantation can't be changed, though.[/hide]
4. The Medium used becomes a Contracted Medium. It is many times more durable than normal, and you can recognize it immediately, in any context.
[hide]Mediums will work despite some damage, but don't work if they're broken. The contract is never canceled, though, and sometimes broken Mediums can be repaired.[/hide]
5. To use the magic, simply hold the Contracted Medium and recite the Incantation. The target, strength, etc. of the spell is controlled by your will.
[hide]You'll automatically know if a spell can or can't do something as soon as you think of it. So, if you never think of trying something, you won't know if it works.[/hide]
Extra commentary italicized and hidden, for easier parsing.

In case of implosion, look directly at implosion.
