Re: DISCUSSION THREAD: hurricane vs swamp fire vs quake vs f
^_^; Sorry if I'm bothering you guys by talking about the flooding but I just need to talk about it somewhere.
Yesterday we were told that the Weiz market that we shop at on ocassion had flooded. Well, apparently, not QUITE. It was a close shave, but at least we were able to get out and pick up some things (milk... bread... the things I forgot to pick up on Wednesday night...).
It was... odd... I drove down the road preparing to enter the normal entrance that I ALWAYS GO IN at but there was a road block set up. Had to enter through a bank area that enters into it as well. When I we say "it was a close shave" it was CLOSE. The entrance I was planning to go in at was underwater o_O;;
It was creepy getting out of the car and looking off to the left of the building and seeing nothing but water and smelling this awful stench in the air. Creepy, too, to look at the over-price gas station I never stop at only to be able to make out the top half stick up out of the water.
The oddest part is knowing that the river was suppose to be down the road MUCH farther than that. There's a stop sign, a railroad, the gas station, a field where a lot of ATVs like to go down and disappear into the woods at - and the river WAAAAAAY beneath a bridge that I travel over every morning on my way to work.
I honestly didn't even realize that the gas station was on a lower hill compared to the market.
Anyways, in edwardsville where my job is, the river ended up cresting at 42.66 feet, for a levee only suppose to hold 41. It's still holding though. Though still alarming to have read . It's farther down the road from where, say, my work place is, but still the same levee system if I'm not mistaken.
I can't wait for this to be all over. I hope it's not too bad for me to say that when we've been so fortunate to be so unaffected by the flood. But, still, these are all areas that I frequent - and where I work, no less.

Re: DISCUSSION THREAD: hurricane vs swamp fire vs quake vs f
Part of me can't help but frown at human folly. Rivers are meant to flood. It's like people who build in the floodplain of the Mississippi and then freak out that, gasp, the river floods.
It's about as stupid as Oklahomans building homes without storm cellars in tornado alley.

In other news its been lovely in Seattle. You guys should really move to more pleasant parts of the country. It rains occasionally, but no natural disasters during my decade and a half in the PNW.
Basically I agree with Kino.

They keep fucking building houses on the hills that are engulfed in flames every couple years.
Seriously. Nothing bad happens in the valleys and coastal areas. And there's still plenty of space. But everyone wants to live in the hills. Why do you need to dig up the environment and build houses that will need to be fucking abandoned?

Punching people is very romantic, and don't let anybody tell you otherwise.

Except for the Great Salt Plains
