Re: DISCUSSION THREAD: Happy New Years ItLers!
Okay, I have no idea (and any will to look it up), but what's the deal with this SOPA?

...I just don't get why we have to call them acronyms... One of these days, we're going to have a KND-styled Acronymn for legislation, I bet.
Re: DISCUSSION THREAD: Happy New Years ItLers!
Stop Online Piracy Act and Protect Intellectual Property Act. The acronyms work well since the names are rather long. And they did a rather great job in masquerading what they actually do with the names; withdrawing support for "Stop Online Piracy" sounds like one supports it, for instance. Though that's a rather miniscule issue in the whole thing, I found it to be a clever bit on whomever came up with the names. Bravo.
Though there's something to be said about complaining about acronyms while using an acronym.

The funny thing is the Wikipedia page still loads before the blackout screen, I've been opening stuff up then quickly hitting stop loading and the page is loaded and the blackout screen is not.
Missing the point, but hey! Wikipedia is useful!

The part that made me raise an eyebrow from the link I posted was this:
Also, regarding those tweets, OMG, it's down and they can't figure out why... because they fail to read ONE SHORT PARAGRAPH. x.x I understand your hatred of people. People are idiots.

Re: DISCUSSION THREAD: Happy New Years ItLers!
My issue is that he muddies up the majority of the post with superfluous shit that means nothing in the grand scheme of things. I'm also not entirely sure if his case example of GoDaddy would invoke the Thick Whois (which is the actual crux of the issue) part of the gTLD legislature; though they do want to use it as a catch-all, not just for the new gTLDs, so I do realize it applies in that case, though not the one he outlines itself.
He also jumps right into thinking that Thick Whois is pushed forward and the de facto future standard. It's a little cart before the horse. I don't even think it is carrying much clout as is though I wager that's not really important (since part of the issue is the idea of it being thought up).
SOPA's issue is the abuse of power it grants. The ability to bypass due process based off of nothing. Copyright infringement calls at the whim of the IP holders with ramifications beyond what they should be given.
Thick Whois circumvents privacy where a whois search grants you all the information you need (and more than you need; why the fuck do I need your address?).
They're completely different beasts entirely.
SOPA attacks the very notion of free speech on the internet and has a direct effect on everyone who uses the internet; Thick Whois attacks the privacy of people who own websites.
Edit: ICANN - Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, since someone will probably ask.

Re: DISCUSSION THREAD: Happy New Years ItLers!
People on Twitter, rather than complaining to the government, are complaining to Wikipedia for being down. Just shaking my head here.
