Google has had a 'search by image' option for a while now, Clef. TinEye has existed even longer. Unfortunately, neither gives any useful results on this.

Well, I meant how does google know what to search. What makes an image look similar to what you're searching?

I was mystified when I found out that this type of image search was possible. I still believe that witchcraft is responsible (as I attribute everything I don't understand to witchcraftery or magics)!

Google's engines run on ground up unicorn. It's anything but not magical.

Essentially, Google Reverse Image Search uses computer vision (think OCR if that helps any) to match an image with their collection of images. From there, they generate text descriptors for the image and use those pairings to create a "best match" / "best guess" approach.
