Oh, god. Just... Look, I love the work that Shakespeare did, I really do. But R&J wasn't really about forbidden love. It was about two sex-crazed teenagers, and not very intelligent ones at that. =/

Hm... I really do need to reread R&J now that I'm older. Haven't since high school.

Rome and Juliet is probably the most over rated Shakespeare. Two teenagers who probably knew no other person of the opposite sex throw their lives away to the first person that just so happens to say "I love you."

It's basically "The Teenage Drama Novel"

No, it's worse. Romeo was pining over some over girl RIGHT BEFORE meeting Juliet.

I don't think that Romeo and Juliet is overrated, I feel that its been trotted around as a "tragedy" for a super long time when its quite clearly a comedy about how silly young love is as well as a commentary and how family conflict in Italian city states could become so overblown and deadly so very quickly.

Of course I'm probably wrong. But I think its funny.

Shakespeare himself is overrated IMO. He's mostly famous because there are few surviving works from that age. And because everyone and their dog read his stuff in school, it's become a major part of English-speaking culture.
