Re: Dream land
And the trick to that is a mix of trying to remember your dream the instant you wake up, and getting woken up mid-dream.
You've only got a few minutes where it's all there before it starts draining out, the best thing to do is try and burn as many pictures into your head as possible.

Re: Dream land
My guess? It has something to do with still living in your parents' house.
edit: That you had such a "boring" dream, I mean.

Trying to remember all the stuff that happens in the first couple of minutes of waking does help remember dreams.

Of course, dreams are usually nonsense, so the only purpose in remembering them is entertainment.

^The ones I remember almost always are, though it gets confusing when I have multiple dreams in a night. Things tend to get jumbled.

Re: Dream land
My dreams are Linear, but they aren't.
All of the thoughts are linked together, but they're scambled in a way that makes it look linear, even though it is obviously twisted.
Here's a snippet from the end of a dream I had written down a few years ago, when I had kept a sleep journal:
I was walking down a flight of stairs in a hotel, I bump into my older brother and conversation was normal, but short and quick as he rushes upstairs. I continue downstairs and open the door to the outside world.
The world is bleak and Grey. There is a Horse-Drawn Carriage in front of me.
This "Carriage" looked tame, but the insides was made all of blood, however, being in the dream I seem to oversee this and walk by anyways, not noticing. I walk by the carriage and the driver peaks his voice. "Need a ride?" he asks. Obviously, already knowing my destination in the dream I ignore him completely and just start falling. The Carriage, remaining motionless becomes smaller as I fall. I wake up.
Over the course of the years, I have witnessed all of these things, though most of them were metaphors. During a trip to six flags I had gone down a flight of stairs only to meet my older brother (Who lives in Dallas). We talked, conversation was normal. However, I was the one who didn't have all the time in the world to chat. He continued upstairs to speak with my music instructor (This was during a field trip to six flags during high school) and I continue down. I open the door and get on the bus.
When we arrived at six flags, one of my classmates had a REALLY bad nosebleed, and had to go the six flag's medical area. One of my other classmates get into a position to offer a piggyback ride, saying "Do you need a ride?". The classmate who offered the ride was known for being cool and collected on the outside, but a literal wreck on the inside, I would get into more details but its slightly personal.
Time passes, and when I ride the titan and start going down the first hill...
I woke up, and realized the correlating events of the dream to the real world.
Dreams have a tendency to not be direct, and sometimes not reveal their true purpose until years later. And even then its sometimes just about a minor thing. Its almost as though they serve as reminders to signify something important, whether it be a fear to overcome or a situation you would have never thought the same way if you hadn't seen the dream.

Re: Dream land
^_^ One of my favorite dreams was me/someone (the dream wasn't too clear and kept switching back and forth between me and some girl in a white gown) flying around landing on roof tops and stuff. I had the impression that me/she was a rather naive person and didn't really understand about the people and things - she was just happy flying around. The world was kinda weird. Frozen but things still changed - like life was moving along but she could never witness it. At one point though I noticed dark clouds and had the notion of things becoming polluted. Found this guy who could fly and see me/her (yay!) but the excitement died when he attacked me and suddenly I was now in the "real world" - but I had to desperately find the guy again and beg him to undo things and put a stop to his pollution because I felt that my not being in my normal realm made the pollution even worse.
^_^ It was a real "mother nature" kinda thing. Nothing was very tangible and concrete, but I loved the feel of everything. Obviously I've actually put it into a coherent narrative here but believe me, the dream wasn't so clear. Even the "pollution" was more a "feeling" than anything that I saw in the dream. ...I'm not going to lie. I've prolly added a few details into it but I think this is as close to the original dream as I remember it.

Re: Dream land
Fundamentally, dreams are a memory sort/defragment that goes on while you sleep, being run across your brain without much reason. Pieces that are related get parsed together sometimes, making it look a bit more coherent.
Of course, because we have imaginations and the like, random concepts thrown together form a kind line. Since what gets sorted is based on what goes into the brain before you sleep, you have an extent of control over the content. Because you don't have complete, perfect control, lack direct sensory awareness, you can "imagine" a sensation to match the scene, and it feels real.
In short, you can control what ingredients go into your imagination-boosting coma-smoothie.
And lucid dreaming is all its own hilariously fun jar there.

Re: Dream land
Typically when I die I just go numb until I wake up. The only time I wake up immediately is during or after a nightmare.
As for Lucid Dreaming, its fun. For me though, its difficult to pull off as often times I don't realize I'm dreaming UNLESS I get into a monochrome environment, which is an instant "Oh hey, I'm in a dream" moment, I then bend the dream to my hearts content. I kinda of wish it happened more often or that I could find a more certain hook to tell when I'm dreaming.

Re: Dream land
Dying and feeling pain in dreams doesn't wake me up anymore. I'm got enough of a narrative going on that "death" can be represented any number of ways, as can pain.
For example, jumping into a different character's perspective the instant I die.

Re: Dream land
I can only usually pull it off when I'm in a nightmare. There's only been a few times that I've been able to do it when I'm having a "story" sorta dream. During the nightmares, though, I feel locked out. I know I'm dreaming but I can't do anything about it. I'm frozen. I think it's my mind is too frozen by terror to want to actually attempt to control the environment.
Once I did have a good moment where I was dreaming about being in a new city (no real life corresponding situation) with sky scrapers. I dunno what triggered it but I somehow managed to realize I was dreaming and ^_^ I started flying. I even started flying through buildings kinda ghost-like. It was fun.
I had one more recently in a pretty romanticy dream. I think it started off as a nightmare but I can't remember, but I think my assassin at some point took on a romantic spin or something. I honestly have no idea what the heck was going on but in the dream I was a guy (weird!) and this villain kept chasing me - in a mall no less - and at one point I had the notion that he wanted to be in love with me. This is where I suddenly realized a little that I was dreaming enough to be like "ew! no gayness in my dream!" (sorry.... I know I probably just insulted one or two people) and while I didn't influence the event in anyway there was a scene in a bathroom where he suddenly came out of a stall and had me by the throat. He started feeling me up a bit and realized suddenly (because of my own mental influence) I was a girl.
I had high hopes for the direction of that dream but I didn't have enough control and the dream shifted around then to something I no longer remember. *sigh* x_x I liked him, too.
