Some Umineko thoughts (Ep7 spoilers):
[spoiler]If Kyrie is, in fact, the culprit, how do Legend and Turn make sense? We know Kyrie (and Rudolf) died in the 1st twilight in Turn, and it's reasonable to assume she died in Legend, as well. Of course, people still die, so someone's going around killing people. Unless all the deaths were accidents, but that would just be ridiculous on Ryukishi's part.

The most logical assumption based on this would be that there's another culprit, but that goes against Dine's 12th, doesn't it? Of course, it's possible to argue that his rules only apply to Game 7 (which would make sense, since everything's all kinds of weird over there), and since a fair amount of Umineko doesn't really fit in with Dine's rules, I'm just going to assume that they only apply to Requiem and keep it at that.

Anyway, back to the first two games, if Kyrie is the culprit, why would the author of these two stories choose to kill her off at the beginning of both of them? That certainly doesn't make sense, especially for an author of mystery stories. So, what if the author, the person going by "Maria Ushiromiya," isn't aiming to reveal the truth about Kyrie? Keep in mind the alias they're going by, Maria, a girl who was pretty much the embodiment of fantasy. It makes sense for this author to have written a mystery about Beatrice, and not one about any other culprit.

After all, compare games 1 and 2 with 3 and 4. There are plenty of differences, but perhaps most importantly, Beatrice is treated differently. "Maria" writes her as the culprit, and she's involved, or implied to be involved, in just about every crime that takes place on the island. However, in the other mystery arcs, she's taken over by another "culprit," such as Eva-Beatrice and Goldsmith. There's also less "impossible" crimes and locked rooms, especially in Alliance.

So, if the author was writing purely about Beatrice, who was it? The most likely person would be Battler (if he survived), Ange, or Yasu (but s/he's not a killer, right?), or anyone else who survived (I doubt it was Eva). If Battler survived, he'd be the most likely since there's the whole "I was born for Father's sake" thing.

And one last thing: I really hate Dine's 12. It makes sense when relatively few people are murdered, but when you have a cast of 16/17/100 people that are going to end up dead, it's pretty unreasonable and limiting to expect one person to kill everyone. And if you especially consider the varied death order, it's practically impossible for anyone to be the sole murderer. Anyway, it would make sense, I suppose, to assume Beatrice is actually a killer.

And I lied. I forget, but in Erika's trial in Game 5, was there anything preventing Rosa from killing everyone? I seem to remember thinking that there was a hole in Erika's point of view that left an opening for Rosa to commit murder (well, sedate or something in this case) in. Oh, well. I just thought, that if Jessica was Beatrice, it would make sense for her to not do anything since she was incapable of doing anything.[/spoiler]
