that reminds me, I still have to finish up vol 1 of the compilation of Sherlock Holmes I bought. Holmes is such an adorable, arrogant asshole. ^_^ The first story was really just a lot of fun.
After what you told us Mr. Kino said, though, when you were watching the movie, I can't get the two out of my head, though, Kino!! T-T I blame you!!

LOL. I've never seen the movie. I've wanted to read the Holmes novels for a long while now just out of the general interest of wanting to read them. The only thing that stopped me before were... the characters...
My idea of "Holmes" has always been:
In short, some guy in his late fifties, smoking pipes, and is very expressionless, and just... "policeman"ish I guess.
and Watson... well... a fat guy who follows and provides the link between readers' uneducated minds and Holmes' overly-sophisticated. The guy who dumbs it down for us, in other words.
I remember watching, when I was a kid, the Disney movie "The Great Mouse Detective" and thinking I would enjoy it if this were Holmes, though Watson was still a very fat mouse who is... expressionless. Despite realizing that the cartoon of mice was suppose to be based off the books I thought it was a "kid" version of the show.
So when I saw the trailer in the theaters, it REALLY piqued my interest to see someone portraying Holmes in a... younger, rebellious light. And I've been constantly told that Dr. House tv series the characters of House=Holmes and Wilson=Watson.
So, I finally gave in and it's really been a treat to find that really none of the things I've ever seen in media has ever portrayed Holmes correctly and that he's actually a very VERY fun guy. Arrogant, childish, unscrupulous and... HOW THE HELL did they turn Holmes into THIS:
Watson is still hard to change my view of. I'm trying hard not to envision him as some fat guy - I don't think he is since it's said he's very ill-health and is recovering from an old war wound (I think he's probably a little TOO thin). Some of his reactions, though, are fantastic. So he doesn't bore me. It's always those scenes that break through the image I've kept so long in my head.

I've read A Study in Scarlet (the first adventure, in which Holmes and Watson meet) and I'm starting The Sign of Four (second adventure, in which Holmes's cocaine addiction is introduced). Since I have the movie characterizations in my head... yes.
>__> I highly recommend the movie. Highly.

Robert Downey Jr giving a shout-out to the fact that, yes, there is sexual tension between Holmes and Watson and, yes, they knew what they were doing while filming the movie.

Honestly, I doubt he pays for it, but this is based off my own assumptions.
I cannot tell you exactly what the laws of cocain are or when they were created - and particular not for europe, where the story takes place. However, the story takes place in the year 1878. I doubt that there are any laws.
Not that it makes much difference since cocain is prescribed medically, and considering all the of the different fields and expertise that Holmes dabbles in, to worm his way into the medical department and obtain certain medical supplies is probably a daily occurrence for him.
And his reputation is widely known. The person who recommends Watson go see Holmes who is looking for a room mate even told Watson that he didn't really like Holmes much because the guy seemed the type to give alkaloid to a person just to test a reaction and not think twice about it. Both cocaine and morphine are alkaloids. Though in the paragraph I think the person was talking more about poisonous alkaloids than to drugs. Still, I doubt that there were much differences in the methods to obtain these. *shrugs* Not that I really have a clue.
So, seriously: Holmes has his ways and considering that the police force takes all of the credit when they have Holmes assistance, I doubt that they are going to be arresting him any time soon.
