They don't really make games for SD anymore; text is virtually unreadable at those resolutions. But, if you're not playing 360/PS3 stuff that are, you know, actually in HD and not just 480i/p, then you can stick with a CRT.

Also, I sincerely doubt you were looking at just plasmas >> Mostly LCD, maybe a few LEDs with the occasional Plasma. They're all rather quite different. At sub-$200, you can probably get a 19" or something without much trouble. If quality is less of a concern, there's a through Amazon; they have smallers (24", 26") but the 32" is priced best.

Edit: btw, if you want to buy a TV anytime soon (i..e, within the next few months), now is probably the best time what with Black Friday sales going on. You won't find better pricing until ... well, next Black Friday.

I've been pretty much entirely unable to play PS3 games on my standard TV because the text is is made too small. It's really only made to be visible on an HD screen.

Maxine, until you get one, you will probably not be able to move forward at all as far as console gaming goes, except for your Wii

The most recent things I've bought are Musha Aleste [Megadrive] and The GTA Classics Collection [PC] (GTA, GTA: London 1969, and GTA2).

Surprisingly, I do not have pictures of these (yet).

Sorry for apparently being a scare monger. Also, ~60% off is pretty good for deals on new TVs. Regardless, get what you can afford; either do so now or wait awhile and pick up something better down the road. Off-hand, you only really have a Wii (and the living room'd 360, if I recall?) so, really, a CRT is probably your best bang-for-your-buck here. You don't really need an HDTV for Wii/PS2 use. So, my best suggestion if you're sticking to PS2/Wii for the forseeable future, I'd stick with an SDTV of some kind. I don't really recommend the $300 or so HDTVs if only for the fact at $500-ish you can get a far better TV (42"-ish range) and not have to settle for "who the fuck are they?" brands.

As for HD gaming ... yeah, HDTVs are relatively small part of the market currently but, at the same time, gaming this generation is for that small segment of the market. It's a luxury item so ... but it is rather silly that they couldn't at least do something for SDTV owners. I remember trying to play Dead Rising on an SDTV way back when I had my 360 without an HDTV; I didn't read a single line of dialogue in the game >> It was too much of a hassle.

And, really, HDTVs are rather cheap these days (and hard to buy anything but an HDTV these days) that it's hard to not have one if you're upgraded in the past few years.

Edit: On the Black Friday subject, it's more of "now is the best time to buy one if you want to" than "BUY NOW IT'S BLACK FRIDAY." Looking at ~50%, on average, off for basically any purchase makes this the best time to buy something. It's definitely more of a "save for Black Friday" thing, though a bit late to suggest "saving" for it.

I wasn't trying to label you a scare-monger, so don't be offended, though I doubt you give a fuck. You remind me of a cat in that regard, as it is scientifically proven that cats do not give a fuck.

And I actually agree 100% with everything you just said, Scy.

Edit: FUCK DEAD RISING ON SDTV TO DEATH srsly.

It blows my mind they can't make it at least playable on a SDTV. Too often Mr Kino and I have had to squint at the screen like "what the heck button does it want me to press? what the fuck is this shit?"

Well, Dead Rising was semi-fixed if you set it to Widescreen but quite a few games (Mass Effect 2, notably) are downright "fuck SDTV users" and leave you basically screwed. That's become the new trend so ... deal with it, I suppose. Though, ME2 was mostly fucking silly due to the font size combination and the font color so you're doubly screwed trying to read it.

And, yes, seriously fuck Dead Rising's small text WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU SAYING OTIS STOP CALLING ME GOD I CAN'T READ IT BUSY LAWNMOWERING ZOMBIES.
technologyisscary

Anyway, it's less scare mongering so much as it's really that fucking bad and I wouldn't recommend anyone making the jump to HD gaming without first having an HDTV. It's bad enough to seriously put a hamper on your enjoyment.
My solution: I've only used the 360 for Viva Pinata and that god-awful Katamari game (fuck on-disc DLC forever) and stuck to my DS. Word.

Otis was like "oh man this is so important" and I was like "Otis I'm swinging a traffic cone into this zombies head, wtf man?"

Also that game was so much fun to watch but I couldn't play it because I'm dumb.
