Not every download is a lost sale. Not that I'm defending piracy, per se, but to think that every single pirate is a lost (actual) customer is sheer preposterous.
As for scans ... *shrugs* I live off of scans. I have a physical collection, sure, but they're less convenient. And typically behind the curve, as it were. That and quite a huge chunk of mine aren't actually available in America anyway (though I still have some of them imported but that import cost is far too prohibitive to keep up these days). I'd be all sorts of behind buying them digitally if only to make it easier to support them.
And devil's advocate, the comic book market isn't really suffering and those scans are just as prevalent.
obligatory I hate "holier than thou I buy only used" far more than pirates.
Though that doesn't really apply much to literature. Don't think there's a huge used book market.
...
Is there?
Well I know that as an artist we have to do something. Piracy isn't going away so I think artists have to find a way to work with it. There are options out there (pay sites). Yet those are often bad ideas. I think the way it is gonna go is ads everywhere whether it is streaming or books. I feel that is the only way in some regards, because it IS free you can't pirate it and if you want it ad free you have to pay more. Then if any pissy hacker stole from say me, then the law could go after them anywhere. I mean in the end it is ethier work with the social norm. Or start ww3. Exaggeration I know.

Zeta look cute fillies.
Most game developers (at least most I've spoken to) have accepted that piracy happens. Fighting it isn't really going to do much and, honestly, at the end of the day, not every download is a lost sale so why bother. If you make a product worth purchasing, people will purchase it. Don't try to go after every perceived lost sale or you'll go crazy trying to stop what can't be stopped.
As for the free with ads vs paid with no ads model, it depends. Rovio has shown that an ad-based revenue stream is no joke (Angry Birds Android raised them how many millions off a free download? Edit: $1M/month) and, honestly, the ads aren't intrusive at all. I leave my ad blocker off for sites like GAF since that's where their income comes for keeping the site maintained.
But ... intrusive ads or sketchy ads and people will circumvent them if need be.

As an aside, anyone here have a Mechanical keyboard? If so, how do you like it? Is the sound really as annoying as people say? Looking at finishing up my new rig build with a new monitor and potentially a KB+M set-up. Dunno yet, though, since my G15/G5 setup still works perfectly fine despite their age (~5 years).
That and not sure how I feel about another $600 on this build ($400 monitor, $200 KB+M) T.T

There's too many obnoxious, bloated flash banners that expand and make noise when you mouse over them for me to want to unblock them, let alone click on them. One that sticks with me in particular was for Gears of War, I think, if by chance you moused over it, it would triple in size and roar very loudly, I was not pleased.
I actually started blocking them initially because their bloated flash puke lagged the hell out of my old computer.
I'll look at your ads when you stop being an ass when you make them.
I don't mind simple image banners, though, as long as they as they don't flash seizure-inducingly or something.
Though, honestly, there's not a whole lot they could do to convince me to click them, I just don't trust them.
Also, Livestream is a pretty bad offender too, they interrupt your viewing to make you watch the ads, not so bad on sites where you're watching something pre-recorded, but it don't fly with me if it's making me miss part of the show, fuck you, put up a banner ad or something instead of being an ass.
